Smokey Bear turns 80 years old today! Smokey's wildlife prevention campaign is the longest-running public service advertising campaign in U.S. history, educating generations of Americans about their role in preventing wildfires. Wildfire prevention remains one of the most critical issues affecting our country. Smokey's message is as relevant and urgent today as it was in 1944. https://lnkd.in/gBDixSkh

A new mapping tool uses machine learning and open-source satellite imagery to model flooding in urban environments. The new model could create maps that predict urban area flooding, which traditionally have not been accessible to urban planners. This could help identify potentially flood-prone areas in urban settings, helping officials make better-informed choices about where to allocate flood resiliency and prevention resources. https://lnkd.in/gaQi43gi

Mexican free-tailed bats tend to live in the same areas that are good for wind energy, according to a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). These findings suggest that wind industry practices like turning off wind turbines during low wind speeds may be a more effective strategy for reducing bat fatalities than placing turbines in areas where these bats are not found.
