“I came to the US first as a J-1 student and fell in love with hospitality during my college years. Today, my heart is with West Maui. It’s been a year since devastating wildfires ravaged Lahaina and we’re sending love to our Marriott associates, their families, and the entire community.   While visiting the team in Maui last September and, again, a few weeks ago, we heard stories about the three associates we lost in the fire and what they meant to their hotel families. Danilo “Danny” Sagudan worked at The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua and the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, and tragically passed alongside his mother. We also lost a couple who both worked at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Kaʻanapali – Eugene and Vicky Recolizado – and we were heartbroken that their young son passed away as well. In remembrance of all the loss and devastation of last year’s tragedy, our hotel teams and guests will join the broader community and gather today on the beach for a moment of silence and remembrance as they cast flower petals into the ocean.   Amidst all the sadness and loss, our teams in West Maui have shown tremendous resilience and strength, taking care of each other, our guests, and doing incredible work in the community.   Thank you to our Marriott ʻohana who have banded together through this dark time – finding moments of light, and most importantly, hope. #Gratitude #Community #MauiStrong

Chef Oscar Wang, Executive Sous Chef, Sheraton Grand Macao, and The St. Regis Macao, has been with Marriott for eight months and instantly felt a sense of belonging from his colleagues and leaders. Inspired to be a chef since he was a child, Oscar says that working as a chef can sometimes be challenging, but it's also rewarding, which is evident as he recently won the 2024 Bocuse d'Or China Selection held in Guangzhou. "I wouldn't be where I am today without the opportunities Marriott affords me. Now, having the honor of representing both my home country of China and Marriott in the Bocuse d'Or Asia-Pacific competition is a lot of pressure. Still, it also motivates me to do my absolute best, and I'm looking forward to the experience." For Marriott International associates, serving up root beer floats is more than a nod to our company’s beginnings as a root beer stand, it is also a way to give back to our communities.    Every year on National Root Beer Float Day, we are proud to host a fundraiser at our headquarters in support of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH). I look forward to this tradition every August: scooping ice cream with fellow associates, making a difference for an important cause, and of course, enjoying a cold root beer float with others in the community. It’s a messy job but sure is fun and rewarding. In 2023, we raised the largest amount in the event’s history, and we looked to build on that progress.    I was delighted to spend time at our event today with the “Star Scooper,” Kasey, who returned for her second year in this role. We caught up and talked about spending time with friends at summer camp and what she’s looking forward to most about the fourth grade. Kasey is a patient at Children's National Hospital and part of the extended Marriott family – her dad, Joe, is a Marriott associate at HQ.
