  • Michael Baker International’s Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, office recently hosted Consultant Days for interns who are part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Transportation Quality Initiative (TQI) Shared Interns Program. The Shared Interns Program is a cooperative effort between PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and the Association of Pennsylvania Constructors (APC) to attract and retain entry-level staff in the transportation industry. The program includes multi-day visits to each of the program’s sponsors to expose the interns to all aspects of the transportation industry, including public agencies, private consulting and construction. Our Harrisburg office welcomed 12 interns from the PennDOT Central Office, PennDOT Engineering District 8-0, the PTC, Michael Baker and Kimley Horn. During the two-day event, the interns learned about consulting, participated in mock interviews and learned about the various technical practices in our Harrisburg office. They also participated in interactive activities, including a sample project exercise requiring the interns to apply planning and design concepts on a preliminary project design. #InternshipProgram #PennDOT #CareerDevelopment

  • Michael Baker International’s work on the New Creek Bluebelt Project in Staten Island, New York, was honored with the Sustainability Project of the Year Award by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Metropolitan (Met) Section. The Michael Baker team provided preliminary design, final design and construction support services for the New Creek Bluebelt Stormwater Management Facility, which was honored for its significant environmental impact, innovative approach and community benefits. The facility restores natural wetlands and waterways, enhancing biodiversity and creating habitats for various species. It also improves water quality by utilizing natural filtration through wetlands, which helps remove pollutants from stormwater, leading to cleaner downstream water bodies. Additionally, the Bluebelt system mitigates flooding risks by providing natural flood storage areas that absorb and gradually release stormwater. Congratulations to the entire project team for this recognition! #ProjectAward #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact #CivilEngineering

  • The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) was recently awarded a $7.4 million Buses & Bus Facilities grant from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration (FTA) as a result of a Transit Asset Management Facility Condition Assessment Plan completed by Michael Baker International. The grant will be used for the rehabilitation of the 102-year-old maintenance and office building located at 265 Melrose Street in Providence. Built in 1922, the Melrose Street facility has served as a cornerstone of RIPTA’s operations for decades. However, the building has faced substantial deterioration over the years, necessitating urgent repairs and upgrades. The phase one rehabilitation and modernization project will focus on critical improvements, including repairing the building shell to eliminate water vulnerabilities, upgrading the HVAC system and completing asbestos abatement. These efforts will prevent further deterioration, ensuring the building remains structurally sound and safe for future use. #ProjectUpdate #RIPTA #BuildingRehabilitation #HistoricPreservation

  • The State Road (SR) 25 Savannah River Bridge replacement project in Chatham County, Georgia, reached a significant milestone when the new bridge opened to traffic in July 2024. The existing Savannah River Bridge was considered functionally and structurally obsolete. The team worked to construct the new bridge parallel to and upstream from the existing bridge structure. Construction began in November 2022 and is part of a larger project that includes the replacement of the SR 25 bridge over Middle River, which is scheduled to be completed in spring 2025. The new Savannah River Bridge improves traffic safety; includes structural and foundational improvements to carry current truck loads, protect against hurricane storm surge and increase earthquake resiliency; and provides increased waterway clearance, eliminating the need for a swing span.
