Chloe Shih shares the ✨ultimate✨ career guide for new product managers.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝗢 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (my ultimate career guide) 👇 Welcome to one of the most gate-kept careers in tech - product management. I love the world of product and strongly believe anyone should be able to break in, so I collaborated with Miro to create a career guide template to help you get started. ✨ 𝗨𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗠 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲: https://lnkd.in/gwxrc4zD So how does one break into product? Aside from APM/RPM programs, most of us transition from other jobs. Your options are: 1. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 Have a career development conversation with your manager to identify the core product skills you need to grow. Take on product-related tasks at the company. Figure out what it takes to officially transfer to product, which varies across companies. If it’s not possible to transfer internally, move on to… 2. 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗠 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 If you’re going to switch companies, it’s easier to choose one in the industry you’re already in. Even if you’re not a PM at this point, you understand the customer segment, their needs, the competitors - which are all important for building your product sense. 3. 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗕𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 This one’s interesting. I’ve seen this happen numerous times, but I’m personally not convinced that it’s as easy as it sounds even for MBA grads. There’s still plenty of actual product experience needed in most PM job postings, but going back to school may give you access to the resources, network, and internships you need to develop that experience. 4. 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 If your background doesn’t align with traditional product job requirements, convince people you can do the job. Take action yourself even when others don’t see your potential yet. • Create a competing product and get noticed (or even acquired!) • Join bootcamps, which gives you hands-on experience to build products • Start a newsletter or blog for product case studies. Explain whether you’d approach the product differently, and write as if you are already a PM. • Repeatedly submit feedback to small startups about their products. When Jess Lee (a partner at Sequoia Capital) emailed the founders of Polyvore with suggestions to improve the product, she was hired as Employee Number 1 and eventually became CEO. This year’s perhaps one of the worst years in the job market – but on the flip side, this is the time to make yourself stand out. Try out my Miro template and let me know if it helps you! #productmanagement #miropartner #miro #miroverse #careerdevelopment
