For centuries, Black businesses have driven economic progress and community development. This year, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Black Business Month, reflecting on the resilience and contributions of Black Business Leaders. Established in August 2004, this month supports the 3.2 million Black-owned businesses striving to overcome persistent barriers to financing. At NABA, we champion Black entrepreneurship through the Diverse Organization of Firms (DOF), a network of Black and minority-owned CPA and financial services firms. Join us this Black Business Month as DOF members share their journeys, strategies, and successes in entrepreneurship. #BlackBusinessMonth #NABA #BlackEntrepreneurs

I moved to the US over 20 years ago, and one of the first connections I made as a graduate student at Ohio University was with the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA INC.) at their regional conference in Louisville, Kentucky. While the distance between Ohio U and the conference was only 250 miles, it took me 1.5 days and 3 greyhound buses to get there. But it may have been one of the most important trips of my career (as I met Deloitte; got the CPA exam kit, work visa, made lifelong friends and mentors)! In NABA, I found an organization whose mission was to support the professional needs of members and to advance leaders that will shape the future of our industry inspiring future generations. That is why it was a tremendous honor to be recognized as their inaugural CFO of the Year. Behind the recognition, comes years of counselling from mentors, tireless support of family and friends, with special thanks to our team at #Nuveen, and our clients that trust us to manage their investments.

Last week, NABA Inc. Richmond had the pleasure of hosting our 3rd cohort of NABA INC.’s Accelerated Careers Awareness Program at Old Dominion University. 31 students from across the commonwealth joined us to learn about accounting, finance, and business careers. They were able to visit the Capital Group and KPMG Hampton Roads offices, learn about various accounting careers, and the skills necessary to aid them in the next steps of life and career. For this year’s case study, the students created their own snack company to present to our panel of investor judges replete with financial statements, market analysis and self-produced commercials. We are so thankful to our partners Capital Group, Virginia Society of CPAs, ODU Strome College of Business, KPMG for their support in bringing this opportunity to our high school students! We’re already looking forward to ACAP 2025: July 20 - July 25!

Congratulations to 4 of our high school students for completing the KPMG Empower Internship! They spent the past few weeks learning about public accounting and professional services from KPMG professionals, engaged in personal & professional development, and community service. The earlier the exposure to careers in accounting, the better! This was such a life-changing experience and we are so proud of their dedication and commitment! Thank you to every professional who poured into them, especially their coaches, Emma Hackett & Jordan L.! Travis Hunter, CPA, MBA shared valuable advice with all the interns: Your origination does not determine your destination, always know that whatever room you’re in - you’re supposed to be there, and never miss an opportunity! #KPMG #NABA #Accounting
