At #Paris2024, beverages are being sold to spectators in reusable packaging, which could potentially replace millions of single-use plastic cups. But the truth is, many of these drinks are being poured into reusable cups from single–use plastic bottles, defeating the purpose of reuse in reducing plastic waste. So while large-scale reuse systems CAN have a major impact on the environment – and can be implemented in situations just like these games – the reality here falls short of the mark. Despite the flaws, the inclusion of reuse at Paris 2024 remains a beacon of hope for the oceans. There is a growing trend for large events like this to use reusable packaging, and Oceana is pushing for reuse to be done more, and to be done better. Learn more: https://oceana.ly/4djTvlg

Today, 50 U.S.-based organizations submitted a sign-on letter led by Sustainable Ocean Alliance urgently calling on #PresidentBiden and the U.S. Government to support a moratorium or precautionary pause on #DeepSeaMining, domestically AND internationally. The letter, written and signed by a powerful coalition of 50 organizations from across the United States, emphasizes the harmful effects of deep-sea mining on critical ecosystems, fisheries, and the climate as a whole (in addition to the financial risk/uncertainty that comes with this destructive industry). In this letter, we urge President Biden and Vice President Harris to uptake the calls of the Indigenous and youth groups who oppose deep-sea mining and to add to the Biden Administration’s legacy of positive policies for our planet. 🌎 Read the full letter → https://lnkd.in/gcfixxTC #DefendTheDeep

READ: An entangled humpback whale seen off California's coast has been freed from the rope wrapped around its tail. While this is good news, concerns still linger about the whale's chance of survival & about the threat entanglements pose to all whales on the West Coast. Entanglement in fishing gear is a top threat to endangered animals off the West Coast, including humpback whales and sea turtles. More needs to be done to ensure whales have safe passage as they migrate and feed off our shores! https://lat.ms/3WfIZ7g
