The Paris 2024 Olympics is rolling out an amazing marketing campaign. With the games underway, we're witnessing a notable shift in how Olympic content is created, distributed, and consumed. What once was an event only consumed through television has become a multi-media giant focused on diverse mediums and activating athletes as content creators. Let’s take a look: 1. Known for "Call Her Daddy," Alex Cooper has been brought on by NBC to host a live watch party from Paris, providing real-time commentary. This interactive experience is set to revolutionize how young, media-focused fans connect with the Olympics. 2. Athletes are now influencers with powerful personal brands and social media followings. By sharing journeys and behind-the-scenes moments, fan engagement increases through mediums like TikTok and Instagram rather than just televised viewing. 3. NBCUniversal is tapping into social media’s talent pool to form the "Paris Creator Collective." The group consists of 27 social media influencers who will be sent to Paris to cover the Summer Games and provide Gen Z with familiar personalities they engage with daily. 4. And of course, podcast content. Over the past months, we’ve been working with Team Canada to create the first season of “Momentum”, a show that highlights the stories of five female athletes. At Quill Inc and CoHost, creating content takes up a large portion of our marketing team's time. But I must admit, at the beginning, not all of the content was quality. We created blog articles, social media posts, newsletters, etc. around ideas and topics that yes, got a lot of hits but they weren't the right hits. Why? Because we didn’t have the right audience in mind when building our content library. We drove tons of traffic to our website but it stayed exactly like that - just traffic. None of that traffic turned into an actual audience for us. Seems like a no-brainer now but at the time, it was a valuable lesson. Fast forward to today and our primary focus is still content but we’re much smarter with it. We think about the consumer on the other end, asking ourselves questions like: ✅ What are their pain points? ✅ How will this content benefit them? ✅ Where will they potentially be in the buying cycle? ✅ Are we using the right language so they know it’s for them? Now the traffic we drive to our website helps us to build that audience. Readers become more consistent, sign up for our newsletter, engage with us on social media, and sometimes, turn into new clients. So this is a reminder to all content marketers and creators to know who your audience is and the type of content they’re looking to consume.
