#YouthDay is coming up on August 12th! 🎉 We’re proud to implement the USAID Western Kenya Sanitation Project, fostering youth leadership in menstrual equity for Kenyan girls. Meet Morine Atieno Owuor, a 34-year-old from Siaya County, Kenya, championing access to essential menstrual hygiene products and information. As a trained boda boda taxi driver, Morine not only provides safe rides for women but also distributes disposable and reusable menstrual products to her customers. 🩸 Morine has become a community youth leader, educating others on the importance of menstrual health and hygiene. Check out Jennifer Hoponick Redmon in the The Washington Post highlighting the importance of clean water and our work to ensure clean water in North Carolina child care centers and schools. Full article without paywall: https://wapo.st/46FBafL
“In North Carolina, a testing effort from 2020 to 2021 of more than 4,000 child-care facilities in the state found some child-care centers were more likely than others to have positive lead tests in their water: those with old infrastructure, those that rely on private well water, and those that housed Head Start programs — a federal program for underserved children. The revelations led to a state law last year requiring that schools test their water for lead, too. “When they’re in school and supposed to be learning, we don’t want the water they’re drinking in school to be contributing to potential cognitive and behavior difficulties,” said Jennifer Hoponick Redmon, a senior environmental health scientist at RTI, a nonprofit research institute that is operating the state’s school testing mandate.” #childrenshealth #waterquality #leadpoisoning #environmentalhealth #cleanwater RTI International The Washington Post NC Department of Health and Human Services Andrew Kondash Clean Water for US Kids

🍞 The Feed the Future USAID Senegal Dooleel Mbay project is integrating local cereals like millet and maize into bread production. By incorporating these local cereals as a substitute for imported wheat, the project works to strengthen local food security, especially during times when grain imports and fertilizer have been disrupted by events like Russia’s war on Ukraine. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to represent RTI International at the first Día de la Ciencia y la Cultura at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences alongside an amazing team of scientist and staff. 🎉It was an incredible day filled with engaging scientific activities, cultural showcases, and inspiring interactions with future scientist! Our team had a blast conducting hands-on activities and sharing our passion for science with the community, especially with the young Latiné children who attended.🌐 🔬Events like these are vital for sparking curiosity and fostering a love for learning in the next generation. We’re committed to promoting educational opportunities and supporting the dreams of Latiné youth. Seeing the excitement and enthusiasm in the eyes of these young learners reminded me of why I do what we do. A huge thank you to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for hosting such a wonderful event and to everyone who stopped by our booth. We’re looking forward to continuing our efforts to inspire, educate and improve the human condition.
