Veteran fundraiser Tycely Williams, a daughter of the South, returned home recently to take her first job as a CEO, leading Liberty Fellowship in South Carolina. In an essay to mark Black Philanthropy Month, she writes of how her nonprofit career has been fueled by the hope "that individual Americans, whatever their differences, share the vision of a more perfect union and the values of freedom, justice, and equality." Tycely says many Black philanthropists and generations of her family — which includes ancestors who were enslaved in South Carolina — have embraced that hope. Those "we celebrate this month answered the call to care for one another, community, and the country even when they had a rightful reason to turn away."
