About us
Truth Initiative is America’s largest nonprofit public health organization dedicated to a future where tobacco and nicotine addiction are things of the past. Our mission is clear: achieve a culture where young people reject smoking, vaping, and nicotine. The truth about tobacco and the tobacco industry are at the heart of our proven-effective and nationally recognized truth® public education campaign, our rigorous and scientific research and policy studies, and our innovative community and youth engagement programs supporting populations at high risk of using tobacco. The Washington D.C.-based organization, formerly known as Legacy, was established and funded through the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between attorneys general from 46 states, five U.S. territories and the tobacco industry. New study published in JAMA shows the effectiveness of truth's text message program, now a part of EX Program by Truth Initiative, in helping teens quit vaping nicotine. In a study of over 1,500 adolescents, participants in the text message program were 35% more likely to quit. And it was effective for all segments of young people including those with mental health challenges, with no evidence of transition to smoking. Today is World Lung Cancer Day, and Truth Initiative joins organizations across the country spreading awareness about the risk factors attributed to this deadly disease. A new study by the American Cancer Society found that 44% of all cancer deaths among U.S. adults were attributable to lifestyle, with cigarette smoking taking the lead as one of the deadliest risk factors. The study also found that most cases and deaths were from lung cancer. The occasion also provides an opportunity to reflect on the role that tobacco continues to play in the consistently high rates of lung cancer cases and deaths. #WorldLungCancerDay
