Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest celebrating the world's rich folk traditions and cultures. Once again, the Wikimedia Foundation's application for observer status at WIPO, the United Nations agency for intellectual property, was blocked by China. This is the fourth time that China opposed our request, based, once again, on false accusations that the Foundation is complicit in spreading disinformation. This misrepresents Wikipedia's volunteer-driven model. The free encyclopedia's policies and practices are rooted in accuracy and neutrality; they help effectively counter misinformation and disinformation online. Observer status would enable us to participate and contribute to WIPO committees where intellectual property norms are set. As the host of the world’s largest online encyclopedia, the Wikimedia Foundation has practical expertise in many of the issues of interest being discussed at WIPO, including traditional knowledge, copyright, access to knowledge during times of crises, and Artificial Intelligence. The Foundation's presence at WIPO would help to ensure that the future of copyright truly reflects the global and diverse needs of the internet. We hope that WIPO leadership will act to help advance global access to free knowledge by enabling our observer status application to move forward in the near future. This is the fifth edition of the WPWP campaign , an annual campaign where editors and communities from around the world add photos to Wikipedia articles that are missing visuals. Despite there being over 100 million images available on Wikimedia Commons, only a small fraction are used on Wikipedia. Earlier this year, photographer Diego Delso – also known as User:Poco a poco – has reached a remarkable milestone: 1,000 featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons! Featured pictures are images that the Wikimedia Commons community has chosen as some of the finest on the website. Diego had his first featured picture in January 2012. Now, more than 5% of all featured pictures on Commons were photographed by him. 👏🏽 From architecture to endangered species, Diego’s work covers a diverse range of subjects. His dedication illustrates the impact of volunteer contributions to Wikimedia Commons' vast multimedia library, sharing an array of wildlife and culture with the world. Asked about his motivations, Diego explained: “I enjoy traveling a lot and had a decent camera with me, so I felt that I could really make a difference to Commons with my contributions. In fact, I consider myself a bit adventurous and also enjoy visiting places which are not mainstream. Images from those places are not frequent and are valuable to the project.” Commenting on his growth during the journey to 1,000 featured pictures, Diego shared that “Wikimedia Commons has been an inspiration to try out different things, like studio or macro photography.” He has even published a significant number of photos that were taken underwater. Diego also shared his advice for aspiring Commons photographers: “If you nominate images to featured pictures or quality images, what you are doing, in other words, is asking for feedback about your work. So you have to be ready to get and accept this feedback, especially if it isn’t the one you expect … be patient and understand feedback as a treasure, and use it as a stimulus to get better.” ⁠Explore more of Diego's stunning photography ➡️ https://w.wiki/9xjh
