Arena BioWorks, located in Cambridge, MA, is a new biomedical research institute focused on uncovering the mechanisms of human disease to identify opportunities for therapeutic intervention. The Institute's private funding model allows Arena to advance novel therapeutics by forming and supporting biotech companies up to the early clinical/series B stage.
Arena BioWorks is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant/Accounting Manager to join our finance team. This individual will be involved in tasks related to everyday accounting operations and financial reporting, including preparing and processing necessary journal entries, monthly reconciliations, monthly/quarterly reporting, and analysis, as well as longer term projects. This role reports to the Controller and will work cross-functionally with other departments along with Accounting/Finance. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting experience, excellent communication and organizational skills, strong attention to detail, a demonstrated ability for self-motivated and independent project execution, and a strong desire to learn.
Responsibilities
Perform monthly, quarterly, and year-end close procedures to ensure accurate and timely completion across a number of general ledger accounts
Manage fixed asset records and prepaid expense files and run monthly depreciation and expense recognition
Provide support during year-end audit, aiding in preparation and pulling support files for external auditors
Monitor cash movement and balances across accounts and completing bank reconciliations
Oversee the accounts payable process, coordinating with external consultants and providing support for internal and external stakeholders
Prepare weekly accounts payable payment runs
Manage 1099 reporting process and prepare annual tax reporting
Maintain expense management platform for corporate cards and out-of-pocket expenses
Process semi-monthly payroll and prepare accounting entries related to payroll and employee benefits
Provide support to other members of the accounting/finance team with ad-hoc projects as needed, with an eye towards process improvement
Experience
Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance
3-5 years of experience in accounting
Experience working in a start-up biotech company a plus
Experience with NetSuite, Prendio, BILL, Expensify, Paychex, ADP a plus
Experience with Microsoft Excel
Knowledge of US GAAP
Strong communication skills for interacting with internal and external stakeholders
Analytical skills with very strong attention to detail
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Ability to work within and meet deadlines while executing on multiple deliverables
