Us Comms folks are wired to navigate tricky situations. MacGyver was my favorite show growing up. ‘Mac’ had a knack for solving problems and extensive scientific knowledge.  → He could unlock a vault with a paperclip and some bubble gum. Comms doesn’t always have all the resources, either. But we know how to play the hand we're dealt. - Assess the situation  - Explore options  - Make it work Being great at Comms requires us all to be MacGyvers. → A mix of expertise, experience and resourcefulness. We're strategic. We're scrappy. We're problem solvers.

We're in PR. Of course we're strategic. We're in PR. Of course we're scrappy. We're in PR. Of course we're problem solvers. I can't tell you how many packs of gum I used to go through in the office when I had to reach a pitch goal...

I used to joke with a former boss that my team’s motto was “Communications: [shrug] I guess we’ll get that done too.” Sadly, we got used to being handed a lot of projects at the last minute with the expectation of making them roll out successfully… and we usually did.

Grace under fire is another important skill when everything is blowing up and you are fixing it. I have the mindset not IF something is going to blow up, but how many times. It is fixing the problem without panicking. It is easier to use bubble gum, duct tape and chicken wire with a cool head.

I love (and live!) this analogy. We’re just as susceptible to group think and confirmation bias as any other group, though, but that’s just another problem to solve (assuming we can see it).

I idolized MacGyver as a kid. I remember in fourth grade, my friend John Sullivan and I would take notes from the episode the night before and review everything at school the next day.

All true. Although I don't think I could defuse an atomic bomb with just orange juice, a nail file and a piece of yarn quite like Mac.

Can't come up with a solution? Just MacGyver it.
