The past several weeks have had some developments and reporting that signal growing interest among tech and gen AI companies to create content experiences with conversational AI — in some cases by pursuing partnerships with celebrity or creator talent to customize apps or chatbots with their voices or personas. But among a hundred other questions, this raises two basic ones: Will consumers want or be comfortable engaging with these chatbots — and maybe more crucially, will talent be comfortable putting them out into the world as text- or voice-based applications, where they can say things that the person themselves never did? On the first, some consumers are interested in the idea: About a third would be very or somewhat interested in an interactive virtual version of a famous dead person, and 30% for a living celebrity, according to VIP+ data from our survey conducted with HarrisX - a Stagwell Inc. company in May. But for most consumers, acceptance and engagement isn’t likely to be automatic. Then the question of talent: Using gen AI to make a celebrity chatbot will have some level of reputation risk. You can program restrictions into the model but never completely control what an LLM generates. You can moderate throughput for hate speech, etc. but never completely control what users upload for a voice clone to read. And that’s ignoring distrust in AI companies to be fair partners, judging by the Scarlett Johansson incident, not to mention that some platforms are lax enablers of user-generated unauthorized voice clones. So what next? Done well and fairly with consent and compensation, partnerships could be very attractive for talent. Celebrity AI chatbots would offer audiences personalized content experiences at a speed and scale that wouldn’t otherwise have been achievable without using AI. But personally, I think the real interesting opportunity is what could be done with fictional characters from owned IP. Read on (with a subscription) for more data: https://lnkd.in/eqBWCtkA
