Remember not so long ago when you couldn’t scroll through Twitter or TikTok without stumbling upon a video of someone cutting into cakes masquerading as everyday objects? Well, get ready to have your trust issues challenged yet again. From the producers of Top Chef and Project Runway comes Is It Cake?, a new Netflix baking-competition series that pits nine talented bakers against one another to create confectionary imposters. Think hyper-realistic replicas of handbags, dinosaur action figures and bowling balls, but they’re actually just cakes. The prize: $50,000, which is hopefully not just a cake that looks like a check.
“There are people saving lives, and I’m making cake look like other things,” admits one contestant in the series trailer. He’s not wrong, but perhaps he shouldn’t be so hard on himself: It takes a lot of skill to make a cake look like a rubber duck.
Hosted by Saturday Night Live’s Mikey Day — who, at one point in the trailer, maniacally wields a giant machete for the express purpose of slicing a cake that looks like a hamburger — Is It Cake? also features a panel of celebrity judges who must guess which cakes are cakes and which are... not cakes. See? This is getting confusing already.
Is It Cake? premieres on March 18.
