Everything You Need to Remember Before You Watch ‘Money Heist’ Part 5, Volume 2

    So... who’s still alive?

It started off as a robbery. Then it became TV’s most dysfunctional, adrenaline-fueled family. Now it’s a full-scale war. In the second half of Money Heist Part 5, we are reunited with Denver, Rio, the Professor and the rest of the heist squad for one final battle. This time, our antiheroes are up against the army, who’ve been tasked to take down every thief they run into at the Bank of Spain. When we last saw our heist squad, things ended with a bang — literally. But in the unresolved aftermath, viewers might struggle to figure out exactly where each character is. Well, we’re here to help you navigate everything that happened before you take a deep dive into the final episodes. Beware, though: There are spoilers ahead involving everything leading up to this season ahead.

So, where was everybody after the explosion?

Tokyo: When we last saw Tokyo, she had just sacrificed herself so that her friends could escape from the army. After being badly hurt in the attack, Tokyo decided against saving herself. Instead, she lured her enemies to their deaths with a string of grenades, blowing herself up in the process and killing the soldiers pursuing the gang. While under gunfire, Tokyo reminisced about her first love, René, and the time she danced with Rio under the stars.

Tokyo (Ursula Corberó)

Rio: When Rio realized Tokyo was trapped in the kitchen, besieged by gunfire, he attempted to drill a hole in the ceiling of the floor underneath her to get her out. Tokyo was elated to see him, although she warned that they didn’t have enough time to effect a rescue. They exchanged loving words just before she made the ultimate sacrifice, and he was left sobbing on the floor.

Helsinki (Darko Perić)

Helsinki: After the army attacked the bank with explosions, Helsinki’s legs were trapped underneath the rubble. His friends eventually managed to get him out, but he was badly injured and needed surgery. When the army advanced on Tokyo, Manila and Denver in the kitchen, Helsinki was still recovering. Stockholm was supposed to be taking care of Helsinki, but, wracked with her own PTSD, she was unable to tend to him, leaving him vulnerable in recovery.

Arturo Roman (Enrique Arce)

Stockholm (& Arturo): After Arturo snapped, took a flamethrower and started chasing the gang, Stockholm confronted him — and it wasn’t an easy conversation. Despite Arturo being her former boss, former lover and the biological father to her son, Cincinnati Stockholm ultimately had to shoot him in the chest. Still, she couldn’t bear the torment of her guilt and wound up being haunted by his ghost — or so she thought. In reality, Arturo was (and is) still alive, but Stockholm attempted to get rid of her hallucination by injecting herself with morphine. Because she was heavily drugged , she was slow to assist Denver and Manila as they desperately tried to place soft objects at the bottom of the elevator shaft while urging Tokyo to jump to safety. Soon after, Denver found Stockholm lying on the floor, delirious. Meanwhile, Arturo was transported to a hospital for urgent care, so we haven’t seen the last of this clown turned killing machine.

Manila (Belén Cuesta)

Denver & Manila: Leading up to the explosion, Denver was stuck with Manila and Tokyo in the kitchen. As Tokyo bought them time, Denver and Manila escaped down the elevator shaft. He had a hard time leaving Tokyo, who couldn't follow because her arms were injured. When he got to the bottom, he and Manila attempted to pad the floor of the shaft with soft objects so that Tokyo could jump down. Denver tried to get Stockholm to help them, but she was too sedated to offer much assistance.

Everyone else: Palermo, Lisbon and Bogotá were in another section of the bank when they heard the explosion. Meanwhile, Matías was in the gold chamber, overseeing the melting process. More to come on that in Part 5.

Suarez (Mario de la Rosa)

What happened to the surviving soldiers?

After Tokyo and a number of soldiers fell to their deaths, it’s not clear how many survivors were left standing — if any. But if some survived, they are still in the adjacent room, just one grenade blast away from the gang. Plus, the rooftop is surrounded by SWAT snipers led by Suárez. (Remember him? He’s been in charge of special forces since Episode 1 without actually accomplishing anything.) So right now, they all have to choose between negotiation or warfare. What’s it going to be?

The Professor (Álvaro Morte) and Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri)

But wait! Where did we leave Alicia Sierra and the Professor?

First, let’s start with the former lead negotiator, Alicia Sierra, who went rogue after Tamayo betrayed her and blamed her for the government’s torture and shootings involving the Professor and his gang. In return, she decided to expose the government: She gave a press conference in which she stated that the authorities were fully aware of every illegal practice she carried out, and she became a fugitive, hunting down the Professor on her own. Once Alicia found and restrained the Professor, Benjamín and Marseille, it seemed like she’d won. But things took a turn when her water suddenly broke and complications forced her to ask the men for help delivering her baby. With the Professor’s assistance, Alicia gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Victoria.

So, where exactly did we last see the Professor? Well, he’s not tied up anymore, and neither are Benjamín or Marseille. But it’s clear that Alicia’s got something up her sleeve — literally. She went to the bathroom and hid a nail clipper up her sleeve. Why? We don’t know — yet. But it is important to note that, after Tokyo’s death, Alicia reached out to the Professor and touched his arm, showing some compassion for him.

What about the police?

Colonel Tamayo was desperate to defeat the Professor and employed morally ambiguous tactics in order to take down the gang. Opposite him is deputy inspector Ángel Rubio, who — after feeling betrayed by his boss, best friend and not-so-secret love interest (Raquel Murillo/Lisbon) — was finally promoted to inspector in Alicia Sierra’s absence. Rubio is adamant about respecting the law above all else. But for the moment, his cautiousness is being buried by Tamayo’s mission to defeat the gang at all costs — even if it means losing innocent lives that he is supposed to protect. In fact, Tamayo didn't even flinch when the army destroyed the Bank of Spain's museum during their attack, losing centuries of art and history. One thing is clear: Under Tamayo’s leadership, anything can happen.

Berlin (Pedro Alonso) and Rafael (Patrick Criado)

This one is important:

What will all those flashbacks mean for the ending of Part 5?

Following Berlin’s death at the end of Part 2, his backstory was told through flashbacks, slowly unraveling how a fan-favorite character could transform into such a narcissistic monster. In the first half of Part 5, the flashbacks continued, and Berlin was shown reaching out to his son, Rafael, after 20 years of not paying him any attention. The first thing Berlin said to Rafael was: “You being born ruined all the fun I was having with your mum.” While Rafael remains reluctant to build a relationship with him, he is seduced by the family business, eventually joining his dad’s squad of robbers. And he also seems, well, interested in his dad’s (fifth) wife, white-collar thief Tatiana. After their first father-and-son heist, at an opera house, Rafael made eyes at Tatiana. Who knows what that could mean, but we are definitely watching out for this storyline.
