New Releases for Weekend Time Travel

Go back in time with Senior Year, Operation Mincemeat and more.
    May 13, 2022

Get ready to say “Bye Bye Bye” to 2022, because we’re rewinding the clock this weekend. Dust off your puka shells and CD player as you head back to high school with Rebel Wilson in Senior Year. Wilson stars as Stephanie, a 37-year-old woman who wakes up from a 20-year coma after falling during a cheerleading stunt. Instead of moving on with her life, the former cheer captain is determined to finish out her senior year strong, including winning prom queen and taking down some old rivals. After revisiting the aughts and learning a few Britney moves, travel back even farther to World War II in Operation Mincemeat. In an effort to divert Nazi attention from an upcoming invasion, government operatives devise an elaborate plan to fool the Nazis with a dead body carrying false documents. If corpses aren’t your thing, take a ride through LA in The Lincoln Lawyer or scarf down some dim sum with the Bling Empire Season 2 gang. Keep scrolling for the full list of new releases this week.

5/11 Operation Mincemeat  What it is: Based on a true story, a group of British government operatives come up with a top secret M15 mission to distract the Nazis from the upcoming Allied invasion of Sicily. The trick? Planting a corpse carrying falsified invasion documents.

Why you should watch it: This isn’t your average World War II movie — using a corpse as a decoy to turn the tide of a war sounds made up. “The idea of the dead body floating up was in the realm of, I would say, urban myth at a certain point in my childhood,” director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) tells Tudum. After the declassification of M15 files and a book by historian Ben Macintyre, Madden knew he needed to bring the true story of Operation Mincemeat to the screen. It’s a harrowing tale, with truth that’s stranger than fiction. At times, it feels like watching a spy movie as you get immersed in the true story. “If you end up getting lost in the story, then I think the story has exercised its grip in the right way,” Madden says.

Bling Empire, Season 2 - New Releases for Weekend Time Travel

5/13 Bling Empire, Season 2  What it is: Get in, we’re going diamond shopping with LA’s über-rich Asian squad. Dynamics are changing among the Bling Empire friends in this newest season. As Kevin Kreider and Kim Lee explore a possible romance, Kane Lim stirs the pot while Anna Shay and Christine Chiu go to war.

Why you should watch it: You’ve just finished the latest season of Selling Sunset, and now there’s a void to fill. Who will step all over you like Christine in her stilettos? Who will take you out to LA’s finest dining spots? You’re in luck because Bling Empire Season 2 is here. From Kane’s lavish dim sum soiree to his truffles and diamonds party, this season’s events are on par with Christine’s broker’s opens (after all, Kane is an agent at The Oppenheim Group). Unsurprisingly, Anna and Christine continue to battle it out, using their lawyers like dueling Pokémon characters. With Kevin and Kim’s budding relationship and Chèrie Chan and Jessey Lee suddenly leaving halfway through, there’s even richer drama in this season than the last.

The Lincoln Lawyer - New Releases for Weekend Time Travel
Lara Solanki/Netflix

The Lincoln Lawyer  What it is: Hotshot Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) isn’t like other lawyers — he works out of his Lincoln Town Car. Just as he returns to his career from a hiatus, a fellow lawyer mysteriously dies. He leaves Mickey his entire practice and a full case load — including a murder case.

Why you should watch it: Mickey Haller has been in the game for years. First introduced in Michael Connelly’s critically acclaimed 2005 novel of the same name, Mickey was also portrayed by Matthew McConaughey in the 2011 thriller film. In this latest adaptation, fans will get to see a different side of the LA lawyer, including more of his Latinx roots. Having an office on wheels isn’t the only unconventional thing about Mickey. He’s close with his two ex-wives, Maggie (Neve Campbell) and Lorna (Becki Newton), and even works alongside them. Newton, best known for her role as Amanda on Ugly Betty, returns to the small screen doing what she does best: fatal eye rolls that will leave you dead with your name in Mickey’s next case file.

Senior Year - New Releases for Weekend Time Travel
Boris Martin/Netflix

Senior Year  What it is: High school senior Stephanie (Angourie Rice) is on top of the world. Graduation is a month away, she’s a shoo-in for prom queen and she’s dating the hottest boy in school. The only thing stopping her is a 20-year coma after a cheer stunt goes horribly wrong. When 37-year-old Stephanie (Rebel Wilson) wakes up, she’s determined to go back to high school and finish out on top.

Why you should watch it: Senior Year will either make you feel incredibly old (AARP is calling) or refuel all your Y2K craze. There’s nothing more nostalgic than hearing Mandy Moore’s “Candy” blasting from the car or seeing adult Stephanie educating her Gen Z classmates on American history, aka the choreography to Britney Spears’ “(You Drive Me) Crazy.” With all the winks to early-aughts pop culture, Senior Year feels like watching Mean Girls, 10 Things I Hate About You, Bring It On and other beloved teen movies from that era. Along with all the nostalgia, it’s a heartwarming story about second chances, forgiveness and remembering the friends who’ve always stood by your side.
