Kid Complains to Dad of 'Big Bug'—Not Prepared for What It Turns Out to Be

When their child started complaining about a "big bug" in her bicycle trailer, the parents initially thought nothing of it.

But when the 3-year-old continued to protest, Dad pulled over to check it out—and none of them expected what he would find.

Alyssa Mosolino lives in Scranton, Pennsylvania, with her husband Phil and their two daughters, 3-year-old Rory and 1-year-old Maggie. The avid cyclists regularly take their children to their park in a toddler trailer strapped to the adult's bike, and usually, they "love it," Mosolino told Newsweek.

On a recent trip, she said, "our 3-year-old kept saying there was a bug in there with them, but she didn't seem too scared. After a few minutes of her continuing to say there was a bug, we decided to pull over and took a look."

In a viral video shared to Mosolino's TikTok account @mamalyssa_, viewed over 580,000 times since being shared on June 17, Phil finds out exactly what was in there, as he pulls out what is not a bug, but a toad.

Laughing, Mosolino tells her toddler: "That was a big bug, Rory."

And rather than being scared, the mom-of-two told Newsweek: "I don't think the 1-year-old really knew what was going on, but our 3-year-old was excited to see the toad!

"She was asking if we could keep it and has been referencing herself as 'Princess and the frog' ever since."

While toads look similar to frogs, they differ in their own way: They have dry skin, warts, and glands that secrete a poison to protect them from predators, according to the National Wildlife Federation. The most common species in the United States is the American toad, which is native to the Northeast.

Hundreds of commenters shared their own stories on the video, with one recalling a childhood memory: "When I was that age I told my mom there was a 'big rat' in the dogfood bin. When she went to look it was an opossum."

"When my oldest was like 3 she told me a fish was on the floor in the kitchen. It was a scorpion," one TikTok user wrote.

"When I was really little I ran inside the house screaming 'WORM! BIG WORM!' There was a snake under my rocking horse," another recalled.

And one particularly wild story from a commenter went: "I told my mom there was an ostrich in the yard — she thought I was angling to go to the zoo — it was an escaped emu."

Mosolino told Newsweek: "I just thought it was a funny video and am glad a lot of others liked it too! I have been sharing videos on TikTok and YouTube, documenting my husband's triathlon training so this was fun."
