Watch Moment Gender Reveal Backfires As Mother-in-Law 'Ruined' Announcement

An expectant mom was left stunned after her gender reveal party was derailed in dramatic style by her mother-in-law.

Gender reveal parties appear to be a divisive idea among Americans today. In a YouGov survey of 1,223 U.S. adults, 35 percent of respondents branded them "unnecessary" compared to 25 percent who felt they were actually "fun."

Mother-to-be Shannon Lawrence-Wilson from Toronto in Canada is definitely of the latter opinion. She and her husband had already had a gender reveal for their first son, so were determined to do the same again the second time around, only this time bigger and better.

"The first gender reveal just myself and my husband did the reveal," she told Newsweek. "This time I wanted the people we love to partake as well. Also, it would've been really great for pictures."

The idea was that everyone present would be armed with their own personal smoke cannons to be let off on Lawrence-Wilson's signal. "We originally had planned to do it outside on the balcony with smoke canons but the weather was supposed to be raining with thunderstorms. So we opted to move it inside with confetti."

Despite the shift in plans, Lawrence-Wilson remained confident the gender reveal would go off without a hitch. That confidence proved short-lived though. "I was in the middle of explaining how we were going to do it together and at that moment my mother-in-law popped hers," she said.

The dramatic moment her mom-in-law's confetti cannon exploded, revealing streams of blue paper to a room of visibly shocked friends and family members was caught on camera in a clip Lawrence-Wilson subsequently shared to her TikTok account shantlawil.

"1st rule of gender reveals: Never give a canon to your mother in-law," she wrote alongside the clip, which has already been watched over six million times, with viewers similarly aghast at what unfolds.

"I would've cried and kicked her out," one user wrote with another agreeing, "she ruined that moment for y'all." A third said they "would never be talking to her again" if they were Lawrence-Wilson while a fourth admitted: "I'd start crying."

Lawrence-Wilson said it wasn't that she was upset by what happened but "more disappointed." "More like a 'oh come on, man' than a 'I'm pissed,'" she said. "We were giving out instructions, and I specifically told them we were doing it all together. I even told them that if anyone popped it early, I would kill them. So the fact that it actually happened was more shock and disappointment than upset."

She said her mother-in-law has yet to explain how it happened. "Quite frankly, I didn't want to know why," she said. "Just because I was so specific on the instructions of not popping early. I just chalked it up to her not listening and just decided to pop it."

Though some in the clip appeared surprised to discover she was having a boy, Lawrence-Wilson said the baby's gender did not come as a shock. "When people would ask what I thought it was, I would always say that the baby was giving boy energy," she said. "It was very similar to my last pregnancy."

Though she admits she wanted a girl the first time she got pregnant, she was more relaxed this time around. "I had already made peace with the fact that I was just happy to be blessed with the opportunity to have another," she said.

Let's hope Lawrence-Wilson can find it in her heart to make peace with her mother-in-law before her new son arrives.
