Sam Altman's Net Worth is $2 Billion. Here's How He Did It

Sam Altman has rapidly become a household name, thanks to the success of his company, OpenAI, and the prevalence of ChatGPT.

Altman, who operates out of San Francisco, California, recently became a billionaire, but not all the money came from his most famous venture.

What is Sam Altman's Net Worth?

Sam Altman has an estimated net worth of $2 billion as of 2024, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index Fund. However, that figure doesn't include a holding in OpenAI, of which Altman is CEO. Instead, much of his wealth has been steadily accumulated through other successful ventures in technology, such as Loopt and Y Combinator.

How Much is OpenAI Worth?

Bloomberg estimates OpenAI to be worth about $29 billion. Altman's most famous company to date, OpenAI raised $1 billion from Microsoft in 2019 and has seen substantial investments and revenue growth since the launch of its popular AI product, ChatGPT.

Altman's involvement with OpenAI began in 2015, when he co-founded the company alongside Elon Musk and other tech luminaries with the goal of advancing artificial intelligence development in a safe and beneficial manner.

Open AI develops ChatGPT, the artificial chatbot that gained notoriety for its intuitive user interface. OpenAI partners with several other companies, primarily based in San Fransisco, to expand the use of new ChatGPT models across other industries, such as health.

Altman was briefly ousted from his position as CEO by OpenAI's corporate board, before being reinstated less than a week later. The board said Altman had allegedly provided inaccurate information about the company's safety processes "on multiple occasions."

How Did Sam Altman Make His Money?

Altman's first break came with Loopt, a location-based social networking mobile application that he started when he was 19. Altman sold Loopt for $43.4 million in 2012, giving him enough capital to move forward in tech.

He soon joined Y Combinator and had become its president by 2014. Under his leadership, Y Combinator funded and nurtured numerous successful startups, including Airbnb, Dropbox and Stripe. Altman's tenure saw the combined valuation of Y Combinator companies surpass $65 billion.

In addition to his work at OpenAI, Altman has also made significant investments in various startups and companies through his venture capital firm, Hydrazine Capital. His portfolio includes notable names like Airbnb, Stripe and Retro Biosciences. Altman also serves as chairman of Oklo Inc. and Helion Energy, companies focused on clean energy technologies.
