Sandwich Recall Update as FDA Sets Risk Level

Tens of thousands of recalled sandwiches have received a classification by the Food and Drug Administration.

Earlier this month, sandwiches and burgers produced by Classic Delight LLC were recalled over a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, and the FDA has given the recall a Class II risk classification.

Under the FDA's definition, a Class II recall is "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

"The recall was initiated after environmental samples tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes," the agency said in the announcement, adding, "The production of these products has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem."

When people eat food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, they may develop a disease called listeriosis, which is a common cause of food poisoning in the U.S. While symptoms can be unpleasant, most people make a full recovery.

However, the disease can cause life-threatening illness in children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. The illness is also linked to causing miscarriages.

According to the FDA, symptoms can begin in the days and weeks after eating a tainted product. Those with a mild illness may have a range of symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, tiredness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If a more serious infection that may require hospital treatment occurs, it can result in headaches, neck stiffness, loss of balance, confusion and convulsions.

Anyone who is concerned about the product or the recall should contact the Classic Delight Consumer Hotline at (419)-300-3202 Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pacific Time, or via email at info@classicdelight.com.
