Silver Alerts are typically issued for missing senior citizens or people who have mental disabilities. In Indiana, they can also be issued for missing children who are believed to be in danger.

Indiana updated its Silver Alert criteria in 2023 to include missing and endangered children for specific circumstances, rather than solely vulnerable adults. Typically, Amber Alerts are issued for missing children who are believed to have been abducted.

The circumstances surrounding the Terrell children's disappearance are unclear, as well as the reason for issuing a Silver Alert.
