76ers Continue To Add, Land Veteran Forward in Free Agency

The Philadelphia 76ers continue to bring in talent to the roster, coming to terms on a deal with free agent forward Caleb Martin. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the agreement is for four years guaranteed for more than $32 million.

Philadelphia lands a proven veteran on the open market to add to its already impressive haul this summer. In a corresponding move, the 76ers are waiving center Paul Reed, who had a non-guaranteed contract for next season.

Martin played the last three seasons with the Miami Heat, helping them reach the NBA Finals in the 2022-23 season. This past year, he averaged 10.0 points. 4.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. He shot 34.9 percent from beyond the 3-point line as well. Martin has proven his worth when it matters most, coming up big for the Heat in the playoffs time after time. During the run to the NBA Finals, Martin averaged 12.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. But he also shot 42.3 percent from the 3-point line, helping to give Miami an explosive offensive attack.

There had been a waiting game with Martin and the Heat over how much he wanted to get paid. Miami wasn't willing to go above a certain number so Martin started to look elsewhere. While the 76ers are bringing in a quality role player to add to the team, they also have weakened a direct rival in the Eastern Conference. Martin was a major part of what the Heat have done over the years so this is a win-win for Philadelphia.

Landing in Philadelphia gives the 76ers another key addition this offseason after they landed star forward Paul George. The 76ers entered the summer holding a ton of open cap space and have worked quickly to fill the spots on the roster. Now having three-star players in place, the 76ers will likely be one of the best teams in the entire league. Putting George with the likes of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey gives Philadelphia a legitimate chance to knock off the Boston Celtics in the East. But the key for them will be how the role players perform when the lights are brightest and adding Martin should really help.

He will likely slot in as a starter for this team but head coach Nick Nurse will have to figure out rotations at a later date. But the addition of Martin looks to be impactful and adds to a very strong offseason run for the 76ers. Philadelphia general manager Darryl Morey has never been shy about going for it all over the years, and this signing of Martin is another indication of his desire to bring a title back to the 76ers.
