Steve Bannon and Marjorie Taylor Greene Interrupted By Protesters

Ahead of conservative media personality Steve Bannon reporting to prison on Monday, Bannon and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene were interrupted by protesters as they spoke to a crowd.

Bannon, the former White House chief strategist under the Trump administration, was sentenced to four months in October 2022 after he was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress for failing to respond to a subpoena issued to him by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack. Bannon avoided starting his sentence while he fought against his conviction via appeals, arguing that he did not comply with the congressional subpoena on the basis of executive privilege, and that he was merely relying on the advice of his former lawyer.

On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected Bannon's last ditch appeal to remain out of jail pending his appeal, which was dismissed by lower courts, meaning Bannon must turn himself in on Monday to start serving his time.

Reporting to serve his sentence on Monday, Bannon arrived at the federal prison in Connecticut and was joined by Greene, a Georgia Republican, for a roadside news conference outside the low security federal lockup.

However, in a post on X, formerly Twitter, journalist Aaron Rupar shared a video showing the two speaking out against the prison term as protesters interrupted and can be heard chanting, "Lock him up! Lock him up!"

Newsweek has reached out to Greene's office via email for comment.

In the video, Bannon can be heard taking aim at other political figures in which he blames for his case stating, "I'm a political prisoner of Nancy Pelosi. I'm a political prisoner of Merrick Garland. I'm a political prisoner of Joe Biden."

While Greene can be heard taking aim at Democrats stating, "Where's the Democrats, where are they? They're nowhere."

Bannon's comments reiterate similar remarks he made in an interview with ABC News broadcast Sunday, as he said he has no regrets about defying the congressional subpoena while describing himself as a "political prisoner."

"If it took me going to prison to finally get the House to start to move, to start to delegitimize the illegitimate J6 committee, then, hey, guess what, my going to prison is worth it," Bannon said.

Meanwhile, on Monday despite the chants outside the federal lockup, there were others showing support for Bannon as several held posters in support with one reading "Free Bannon."

This comes after the Republican congresswoman also took aim at President Joe Biden and several political figures amid Bannon's prison term writing on X on Sunday, "While Republicans want to turn on cruise control and coast to November, the Biden regime is putting patriotic Americans in prison, and turning a blind eye to government weaponization. Tomorrow, Steve Bannon will report to federal prison. This is a DISGRACE to our country, and an affront to the principles of justice it was founded upon," Greene added. "Republican voters need to fight harder than ever: this election is not over."

Greene, a fellow Trump loyalist, also shared a clip of herself appearing on Bannon's WarRoom podcast, in which she accused the January 6 committee of being "illegitimate," adding that Bannon's contempt conviction should be dismissed.

Greene noted that former House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy selected five Republican lawmakers to join the committee in July 2021 in which Jim Banks, and Jim Jordan were rejected by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi leading to McCarthy withdrawing his other picks resulting in Pelosi selecting Adam Kinzinger to join Liz Cheney as the only two Republicans on the January 6 panel.

McCarthy then withdrew his other picks, resulting in Pelosi selecting Adam Kinzinger to join Liz Cheney as the only two Republicans on the January 6 panel.

Kinzinger and Cheney were among the 10 House Republicans who voted in support of impeaching Trump after the riot.

Speaking on WarRoom, Greene accused Kinzinger and Cheney, both staunch Trump critics, of being "clearly Democrats" who are "traitors" to the GOP.

"She [Pelosi] put them on the committee. That meant the committee was set up with less than 13 [House members]. Once again, completely breaking the rules of the house, her own rules as speaker of the House. They put out these subpoenas, none of these subpoenas meant anything. This committee was completely illegitimate, and it was political in nature and the entire Democratic Congress had gone rogue at that point," Greene said.
