Jason J This move had so many implausible moments that I couldn’t take it seriously & I wished I never started the film. A case of style over substance. Avoid if possible. The pro is undoubtedly Curtis, a most charismatic and engaging actress who lights up virtually every movie she's in - well, not CHRISTMAS WITH THE CRANKS. But I digress. She is the heart and soul of this film and pretty much the only reason to watch it. That being said, the filmmakers make it tough for us to take her seriously as a cop - for some reason they put her in an oversized hat and a uniform a couple sizes too big. It gives the impression of a young girl playing dress up. But Curtis overcomes this obstacle and gives a compelling performance. The same can't be said for her co-star. A movie like this is only as good as its villain, and Silver is a dud. He's a fine actor who has given many wonderful performances, but Eugene Hunt is not a character who inspires fear or trepidation - more like annoyance. Even worse are Phillip Bosco and Louise Fletcher as Curtis' parents. Their scenes are bordering on unbearable. There's not many surprises here - I pretty much knew who would die within the first 20 minutes. And the screenplay has Curtis' character do such head-shakingly stupid things that we occasionally question her sanity. It's a drab and dreary looking movie, and one frankly wouldn't guess by watching this that Bigelow would go on to become the first female Best Director Oscar winner. Thankfully, Curtis helps us forgive a multitude of sins. She almost single handedly makes a very disappointing movie recommendable. Almost.
