It operates on the standard formula of fun, slightly distinctive characters plus twists on twists; you know the deception is coming for both the audience and those on the screen, it's up to you to predict how it's going to shake out. Heist structures itself relatively well, setting up a few easy wins for the audience to make them think they have a handle on the con before throwing some curveballs your way. Most of the actors do a pretty decent job, even if Rebecca Pidgeon feels shockingly out of place and largely irrelevant to the plot. Where it seems to stumble is tone - there is never a sense of real fun or superficial entertainment value, nor is there a real grit or toughness; it's more a paint-by-numbers that functions as intended but doesn't go beyond. The details may have a couple of surprises, but the story beats and character arcs don't. Still, a decent enough representative of the genre as a whole.
