Shutter Island

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not rank with Scorsese's best work, but Shutter Island's gleefully unapologetic genre thrills represent the director at his most unrestrained.

Julie and Brandy Autostraddle It's supposed to be some suspense thriller... somebody should have said hey why don't you go see the hilarious comedy of Shutter Island. Sep 1, 2021 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator It's not a serious film and it's not even an especially suspenseful film but it is fun, in a Dr Caligari sort of way. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online A twisted psychological thriller that leaves you guessing until the very end, Shutter Island is yet another fantastic collaboration between DiCaprio (giving another pitch-perfect and near heartbreaking performance) and director Martin Scorsese. Rated: A Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Ray Pride Newcity A thrill of form and function, a fully crafted exercise in visual style and classical genre legerdemain. Rated: 9/10 Jul 2, 2024 Full Review Michael Leader Den of Geek Even when these deeper textual aspects are pushed aside, Shutter Island is still a thriller that is gripping, chilling and wholly entertaining... Rated: 4/5 May 7, 2024 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia As a mystery thriller, it is a direct one-way ticket to madness, and it's impossible not to get hooked or think about it once it's over. Without a doubt, this is one of Scorsese's best films with DiCaprio. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 8/10 Feb 21, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Amy S It’s great, my expectations were high as it’s rated so highly among movie buffs (maybe too highly rated). Leo is great and the story twists/clues keep you thinking. Overall it’s a great watch, definitely a staple in modern-ish film making. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Tyler S For my first time watching, I was all over the place. I liked the tone it followed, but the story was all over the place. Things cleared up as it went on, but I did not like being confused for 80% of the movie. I'm sure the 2nd time I watch this, I'll understand much better and my rating will go up a bit, but it did not work very well the first time. Some of the twists were pretty god tho. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/26/24 Full Review Alex B Great movie, good twist. Had me thinking (I don’t usually do this) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/21/24 Full Review BrandNewLogic C A cinematic experience that will leave you questioning reality itself. With Leonardo DiCaprio delivering one of his most intense performances and Martin Scorsese's masterful direction, this film immerses you in a dark and mysterious world where every clue leads to more uncertainty. The gripping storyline, atmospheric tension, and unexpected twists make it a must-watch that will keep you on the edge of your seat and linger in your mind long after the credits roll. If you love thrillers that challenge your perception and keep you guessing, "Shutter Island" is the perfect choice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Salman S it's actually a great movie, but i don't think it's as good as everyone says Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Jim S Eh, Hitchcock it ain’t. As a thriller it’s pretty loose , with needless scenes and a backstory that turns out to not be relevant. When we finally get to the revelation, you may wish they’d come up with something different.
