What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its storyline isn't as wondrous as its visuals, but $9.99 has a sophistication and handmade charm that sets it apart from the animated pack.

Eddie Cockrell Variety A deliberately coarse character style that's more Gumby than Gromit. Dec 16, 2009 Full Review Tom Long Detroit News A small gem of an animated film, $9.99 manages to be rich in whimsy and fantastical turns while still rooted in human ground. Rated: B+ Dec 11, 2009 Full Review Philippa Hawker The Age (Australia) Set in a grim, grimy, often bleak world, a hybrid, densely detailed environment of interwoven stories and chance encounters, with occasional flights of fantasy and rare glimmers of hope. Rated: 3/5 Sep 17, 2009 Full Review Katina Vangopoulos Moviedex After the smooth finish of Mary and Max earlier this year, $9.99 can't match up with its similar dark themes. Rated: 2/5 Oct 29, 2010 Full Review Simon Foster sbs.com.au There is so much to admire about the skill involved in the stop-motion craft, but all films, regardless of their devices, rise or fall on their story, which is abstract and unengaging in $9.99. Aug 9, 2010 Full Review Betsy Sherman Boston Phoenix Director Tatia Rosenthal's inspiration was to populate the proceedings with animated 3-D figures; her cerebral, darkly funny film is a feat of stop-motion rumination. Giorgi K One of the main reasons why "9.99" is such a good movie is its ability to delve deeply into the complexities of the human experience. Each character has their own unique struggles and desires, and the film presents them in a way that is both relatable and profound. From a struggling writer who yearns for recognition to a middle-aged man who discovers the true meaning of love, each story is engaging and thought-provoking. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Sameir A It's an animated feature film, showing life and struggles of a few people in a city. They belong to different age has different background. There are a few good elements, but, not really great. They should have developed the Angel character and added more depth and connection to the stories. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/08/21 Full Review Audience Member i think $9.99 is a amazing movie but its not a kids movie because its rated R and has lots of swearing is very vilonte and has uncensored nudity Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Un petit bijoux d'animation pour une question qui n'a de réponse que ce que l'on fait. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member At first it seemed like a boring screed I've heard a million times about how disconnected modern society is, but the stories all go in interesting directions, and Rosenthal has a deft editorial touch so I ended up settling into its mood and enjoying myself. The old man was fun; I love it when characters just roll with all the weird shit that's happening around them without batting an eyelid. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member $9.99 is a wildly original, often surreal look at the different facets of love, both intimate and familial, and features both a singularly fresh animation style and an uncommonly intelligent script.
