What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman's welcome return to rom-com territory, A Family Affair squabbles with its own tonality too much to elevate its litany of clichés.

Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It makes no emotional sense whatsoever. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) The movie is what it is. It’s not going to blow your mind, change your perspective on life or inspire you to rewatch it. But in the moment? It’s fine. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday The actors give it their all, but it's a movie you've seen a million times before. Rated: 2/4 Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Lael Loewenstein FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It is what I would call "ludicrously bad." Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Tatat Bunnag Bangkok Post Kathy Bates, as Leila Ford, introduces a subplot that ultimately goes nowhere, contributing to the film's uneven pacing. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Frank Swietek One Guy's Opinion Cushy and predictable...contrived, but not clever enough to overcome the essential shallowness of the concept or the slackness of execution. First L Set down the scalpels and calmly back away. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Mike S This movie started out so strongly, then just fell flat is was a chore to finish Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Heather L The only reason I gave it even 2 stars, is for Joey King. I realize that botox is a personal choice and the pressure in Hollywood must be to have it done. But I was so distracted by Nicole Kidman's face that I couldn't get past it. It just didn't move. I am begging actors to let their faces be what they are. How is it acting when the only way you get emotion is from tone of voice and script? O Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Audience Member Very cute. Love the cast 👍🏻 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review John C. W OMG. This movie was so terrible. They purposely made Zac Efron's character very whimpy. Tough break Zac Efron. I also feel sorry for Nicole Kidman & Kathy Bates who had to go along with this train wreck of a D movie. If I call it a B movie that would be a compliment and I don't wish to lie. As for Joey King. I love her. She's done some great work, but lately her movies have been misses for a few years now. I hope she finds better scripts out there. Because she's fading quickly. And I want to see her in great movies. But not movies like this one here I had to suffer through. Good luck Joey King. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Ben S This movie actually came as a true surprise to me! I went in with the idea that I wouldn’t like it based off of social media’s reaction to it. Yes, one or two scenes were a little corny, however it was beautifully scripted and the acting was perfectly executed. Everything felt right and wholesome in this movie. The soundtracks fit perfectly and the charisma between the characters was absolutely undeniable! I’m not sure this movie is for the younger generation, which is a win in my eyes. It explores loss, power-struggles, friendships, and new found love when your age feels like you’ve absolutely fizzled out of the probability of such. However, this movie has a little bit of something for all ages. There is definitely a lesson to be learned for anyone 20+ with this film, and I think it’s absolutely a breath of fresh air. Despite the negative reviews, I throughly enjoyed this movie and loved seeing some of the best actors make me believe their performances once again. On a scale from 1-10 I would rate this movie an 8.5/10! And I would definitely recommend it! ❤️❤️❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
