Critics Consensus

Though unabashedly juvenile and silly, Airplane! is nevertheless an uproarious spoof comedy full of quotable lines and slapstick gags that endure to this day.

Michael Blowen Boston Globe The popcorn will probably stick with you longer than this silly saga but, if you need a few belly laughs, get a boarding pass. Airplane is the ultimate take-off. Apr 28, 2018 Full Review Ron Pennington Hollywood Reporter The level of humor is not always consistent, but the filmmakers have thrown almost everything in with a shotgun approach and the routines work more often than not. Jul 3, 2017 Full Review Martin Chilton Daily Telegraph (UK) The really great thing about Airplane! is that the jokes undercut your expectations so deftly. Rated: 5/5 Jun 8, 2015 Full Review Kenneth Turan New West/California It is very funny in a very silly kind of way and that people who intend to see it should do so as soon as possible. For this is a movie whose charm comes totally from the unexpected, off-the-wall nature of its jokes. Nov 4, 2021 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Part of what makes this all so effective is how straight the actors play their parts; in the face of unending fatuousness, the cast remains earnestly aboveboard. Rated: 8/10 Jun 28, 2021 Full Review Bryan Reesman NBC News THINK It reminds us of the importance of pushing boundaries at the same time that it gives us a playbook for doing so in a good-natured rather than vicious or belittling way. Carl B Some of the content and references won’t hold up over time for younger viewers (and may be offensive). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/24 Full Review Jeff P The greatest movie ever with the best humor! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review lynn l This is the movie that started all the parody movies-a must see for all the people who love really bad puns and jokes. I had forgotten just how funny this was. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Anne H Airplane! is a must-see classic! So fun to see on the big screen. Thank you! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/14/22 Full Review Michael C Well, what can I say about "Airplane!" that has not been said already? After more than four decades, this excellent parody of the disaster movie genre has stood the test of time. First time writers and directors Jim Abrams and Jerry and David Zucker (ZAZ) just went all out and for the most part, it worked. My only criticism of the movie is a few jokes are repeated a little too much. "Headquarters? What is it?". "A hospital? What is it?". "The cockpit?..." you get the idea. One of the reasons why the movie works so well is because there are a good number of jokes you do not see coming. The late Ethel Merman's cameo is one such highlight for me. The late Stephen Stucker, a close friend of ZAZ who worked with them at their Kentucky Fried Theater in 1970s Los Angeles, is just having the time of his life with one sharp line of dialogue after another. All of the roles are perfectly cast in my opinion. ZAZ's choice to not cast comic actors in the role was a brilliant idea that helped make the audience laugh even more. The late Leslie Nielsen was nothing short of terrific. "Airplane!" is a true comedy classic. I am sure it will be viewed as such for many years to come, and rightfully so. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Nick C Airplane a silly movie but can’t make you laugh humor is abit outdated but still a good movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
