Avengers: Age of Ultron

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Exuberant and eye-popping, Avengers: Age of Ultron serves as an overstuffed but mostly satisfying sequel, reuniting its predecessor's unwieldy cast with a few new additions and a worthy foe.

Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association There is little in this film that is new, but that doesn't matter. The characters are still entertaining, the action scenes thrilling and near orgasmic, and the human relationships touching. Mar 7, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey DVDTalk.com Several thrilling action sequences, a great many good jokes, and an unshakable sense that everybody is just going through the paces. May 28, 2016 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com Joss Whedon set a higher bar with the first "Avengers" (2012) and tried, in many ways, to top it here. He got close... May 5, 2015 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies I ate up the funny banter between each unique superhero personality. I loved the large-scaled action which seemed ripped straight from the pages of a comic book. I was interested in the future movie tablesetting. Rated: 4/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Raising the stakes and swinging for the fences like a good film sequel should, Joss Whedon pays off the Phase 2 initiative with both a new level of groundbreaking effort and a continued dedication to the master blueprint of a grander big picture. Nova S Cool hulk stuff……….. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/01/24 Full Review Will S Oooooh so close. Doesn't quite come together. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/24 Full Review Edwin Emmanuel M Avengers: Age of Ultron, the sequel to the hit 2012 film, promised to raise the stakes even higher and delve deeper into the team's internal conflicts. However, in its attempt to surpass its predecessor, the film loses itself in a disorganized plot and an execution that leaves much to be desired. The introduction of the villain Ultron, played by James Spader, seemed promising at first. However, AI's transformation from benevolent to global threat feels rushed and unconvincing. Ultron lacks the depth and menace we'd expect from a central antagonist in a superhero movie, and his plan for humanity's extinction feels trite and uninspired. The film also suffers from the same difficulty as its predecessor in trying to balance character interactions and spectacular action. This leads to a series of underdeveloped subplots and moments of comic relief that interrupt the narrative flow. The introduction of new characters, like the Maximoff twins, feels rushed and doesn't allow enough time to emotionally connect with them. The team's internal conflicts, which were supposed to be the core of the film, are often resolved abruptly and superficially. The tensions between the heroes could have provided some rich emotional exploration, but instead they feel like temporary obstacles to the inevitable reunion and joint fight. Action sequences, while visually impressive, often lack a clear sense of geography and physical logic, making it difficult to follow the action and understand the implications of what is happening on screen. While Avengers: Age of Ultron offers some thrilling moments and spectacular fight scenes, it ultimately fails to capture the same magic as its predecessor. The messy plot, unconvincing villain, and lack of character development keep it in the territory of mediocrity compared to other superhero movies. Avengers: Age of Ultron is a sequel that attempts to replicate the success of the original but fails to capture its charm and cohesion. Despite its bright moments, it is overshadowed by its structural and narrative problems, leaving fans feeling disappointed and wasted potential.
