Tense, well-acted, and at once atmospheric as well as brutally impactful, Backcountry marks a memorably assured debut from writer-director Adam MacDonald.

Geoff Pevere Globe and Mail Backcountry thrives in the close-quarter details: the verbal knife-pricks of a dying relationship, the jangling impact of the smallest sounds breaking silence, that dread certainty that you're completely lost and it's getting dark. Rated: 3/4 Aug 28, 2015 Full Review Linda Barnard Toronto Star MacDonald does quite well in his dramatic feature debut with solid performances from the cast. Backcountry is satisfyingly intense, although quite gory in patches. Rated: 3/4 Aug 27, 2015 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times "Backcountry" inevitably brings on the bloody, but it finds atmospheric ways to depict how the bucolic hush of a nature getaway can morph into a survival nightmare for the unprepared. Mar 26, 2015 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh The relational tension unnerves you early on and, while not entirely surprising, manages to showcase a threat of mother nature without demonizing the main threat. Rated: 3/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Paul Lê Bloody Disgusting Adam MacDonald’s colossal debut features a unique ursine nightmare impelled by human error. Rated: 4/5 Jul 21, 2023 Full Review Jason Adams My New Plaid Pants Everything goes just the perfect amount of terrifying. Jul 2, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Barbara A Spoiler Alert. Predictable ending since the backpacking weekend camping (at the boyfriend’s favorite park ) meets with danger when he takes the wrong turn into the wilderness. He did not take a map, a decent weapon, mark their trail, and left the girlfriend’s cell phone purposely in the car. He also does not hire a guide. Totally unbelievable stupidity in the wilderness when after getting lost, the boyfriend leaves the food pack close and in reach of bears even when they stumble upon dead prey and see huge footprints. They don’t even leave the fire burning at night to stave off predators and manage to just go to sleep in a flimsy tent and wonder out loud what their fate will be. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review Larry L This movie is too good for words. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Audience Member The perfect example of what NOT to do while camping. As someone who is a former park worker, I was frustrated beyond belief during this film, but realistically this happens to people more often than I’d like. I will say that the speed and violence of the attacks are spot on, bears will eat prey alive. Film wise, I’m not a fan of super close up blurry shots. It’s a solid watch, but I probably wouldn’t watch it again. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Ali A Do not waste your time, watch It and keep skipping 10secs every 5secs to save time as nothing happens for the majority of the movie Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review Blue The plot armor this girl has is crazy Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/12/24 Full Review Me A I'm not sure why there is so much hate for this movie in the audience reviews. A slow burning, cautionary tale about what NOT to do in nature and why you should not ignore the warning signs. I really connected with the characters and while I felt that the boyfriend was possibly stubborn and dumb beyond belief, he really loved her and wanted to impress her...it didn't go well, but that happens in real life more times than the audience wants to realize. If you are not an impatient person fixated on stunts and CGI action sequences and are just interested in a movie where the characters make the film, not the special effects, check this one out. It's based on a true story, too, which makes it even more chilling. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
