Batman Returns

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Director Tim Burton's dark, brooding atmosphere, Michael Keaton's work as the tormented hero, and the flawless casting of Danny DeVito as The Penguin and Christopher Walken as, well, Christopher Walken make the sequel better than the first.

[...] Returns on its own is a fascinating beast, a movie following iconic characters that have been interpreted and reinterpreted throughout the years. Yet, it’s a movie only Burton could have made. Rated: 4/5 Aug 3, 2024 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews Although Batman Returns is tonally lighter than its predecessor, the film nevertheless exists in the shadows. It’s also weirder, an indication of Burton exerting stronger creative control. Rated: 3/4 Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s everything you’d want a Burton Batman movie to be, complete with some incredible set designs and yet another banger of a score from Elfman. patrick p My son and I loved it !!! I saw it when it first came out in 1992, and didnt realize how well done it truly is until I grew older. Its visually amazing, and also has a great story, music, and just an all around great movie. Go and see it !! :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Oscar O In three years the writing and acting went downhill from the first movie to the second movie everybody just wants to hump cat woman and the global warming agenda has started to be forced down our throats!!! It’s a shame. This movie is not appropriate for younger children and this movie is not as good as the first one by a huge margin. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Melissa M my son and I loved seeing this Batman movie in the theater! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Michael P The Good 1. This is a movie that shines brightly on the villains and does a great job showing you their good and bad, offering moments to show why they became who they became or moments of their humanity and makes you feel sorry for their downfall, most of the time anyway 2. Speaking of the villains, all the actors for these villains put on a great performance and made you feel like they were these characters, even if they were well-known actors in these roles 3. The final showdown was really impressive, even for a movie that's over 20 years old. The actual way it played out not so much but the technicallity to pull that off paid off and most of it holds up even now. The Bad 1. I think this movie suffers from too much Tim Burton. Mainly because of The Penguins literal routes and looking like a penguin, it felt way to weird. 2. For a Batman movie, it felt like Batman was more of a side character. I wish there was more in the movie of Batman figuring out and detecting rather than seeing the behind the scenes moments and having certain reveals shown that way 3. The movie felt like it literally only took place in 3 or 4 locations, city square, shreck towers, the sewer and the mansion. There were a couple other places shown briefly but it made the world feel smaller than the first one when it should have tried to be bigger, personally opinion. Overall: Not as good as the original, whilst more villains and they had lots of heart, it never felt like a Batman movie which is what I wanted it to be. I mean, it is called "Batman Returns". I expected more Batman Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review Death T The Best Christmas Movie. PERIOD.Even way better than the first epic movie. Despite having less screentime you can feel Batman's presence in the entire movie. Despite knowing he has less you wouldn't believe it because you could feel every character and Gotham City itself is going all according to Batman and even his feelings and conflicted emotions can be felt in every situation. If you look carefully you could see those details delivered wonderfully and masterfully by The Michael Keaton. BATMAN RETURNS IS Christmas Masterpiece. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Bradley G Batman Returns is yes a solid sequel delivered by Tim Burton as he has yes kept the Darkness going but it add quite a chilled kind of frostiness. One thing I absolutely loved this movie was Danny DeVito's performance as The Penguin as he adds a lot of great surface causing absolute domination of havoc. I would say Michael Keaton was a lot more tormenting under the mask of the cape crusader. My last point being Michelle Pfeiffer's performance as the classic Catwoman was a fantastic addition to the film making it more fierce in the role making it a lot more dark minded and twisted for Catwoman.
