Mike Hale New York Times The debut feature of the one-named Indonesian director Edwin, has a spacey vibe. Rated: 3/5 Sep 11, 2009 Full Review Nicolas Rapold Village Voice The resulting experience could very easily be described as off-putting -- which well suits the uneasiness of the subject. Sep 8, 2009 Full Review Ard Vijn ScreenAnarchy I was interested to see if "Blind Pig Who Wants To Fly" could convey the inner turmoil which director Edwin so easily describes in the short synopsis he put in the press map. The answer to that is "yes." Jan 17, 2020 Full Review James Wegg JWR The payoff combination of Karaoke unleashed, with its slinking lyrics spilling over archival footage of the riots (replete with half-step modulations) is unforgettable. Audience Member Director Edwin has real guts making something like this, but the 'I Just Called to Say I Love You' heavy-rotation is just too 'Chungking Expressy' in my humble opinion. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Before you watch this movie, check out http://www.babibutafilm.com/blindpigwhowantstofly.html. This is one of the main points to hold against this movie: it seems the story is so fragmented, the story line is difficult to understand even if you know a bit about the position of ethnic Chinese Indonesians. That position and their identity is subject of this movie. The movie follows a group of lower to average income Chinese and the people they interact with in Surabaya, without much of a story that moves forward. At times haunting, at times wacked, with actors of different quality and excellent camera work, this is an interesting movie by a talented young film maker. This movie won the FIPRESCI-award. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member a subtle, unusual yet confronting exploration of discrimination endured by indonesia's ethnic chinese - and the search for, and loss of, identity. various short-scene fragments form the overall jigsaw, piece by piece. very thought-provoking. 2/10 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member little bit messy... weird, but i like it. i don't know why...
