What to Know

Critics Consensus

Blood Father meets every expectation a film fan could have for a latter-day Mel Gibson action thriller with its title -- and even, in some respects, handily exceeds them.

Nigel Andrews Financial Times The dialogue goes like a Gatling gun and the action is its match. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Blood Father boasts enough momentum and lively banter to compensate for any generic leanings. Robert Gantz' scorched cinematography keeps the heat on, even during quieter moments. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Some of the dialogue sounds a little written, though Gibson's tendency to bellow his lines like a wounded bull elephant compensates and carries us along with the story. Rated: 4/5 Oct 9, 2016 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Mel Gibson might not be able to leap through dozens of stunt sequences anymore, but the man has lost none of his psychological vigor or resolve. His brand of crazy still works in this throwback actioner. Rated: 3/5 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine Finds a way to channel Gibson's fury, rounding up a satisfactory and effective film, and without a doubt, the redemption he needed. Kyle J Just terrible: Mel’s overacting, the trite story, the too-much-talk-in-a-shoot-em-up script. HOWEVER, if yer still in middle-school and barely make Cs, you MIGHT like it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/18/24 Full Review Diogo S Mel Gibson gives a magnificent performance!! The story is simple but the execution is perfect and the acting really makes the movie, specially Gibson, a very underrated actor, who really elevates the movie whith his nuanced and at the same time powerful performance, you completely buy his rage and his regrets, the fact Gibson himself shares a lot with the character when it comes to atonemnt for past sins only helps an already fantastic performance. If the world was fair Mel would have won acting awards for such a tour de force !!! The father-son chemistry was pretty good and the action top notch! But don´t be confused, this is not an action movie, this is a superb drama where character´s study shines and that is complemented with great action sequences with old mad max of course... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Richard B Mel Gibson always good to see in movies, one of the best living actor Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review Willy W A taut, well-acted, relationship-focused redemptive action flick with some clever lines and dialogue. Better than the violence-glorifying and CGI-laden fare that's so common nowadays in the genre. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review T T It was a very engaging and entertaining movie. Mel Gibson did a good job. Good plot and acting overall. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review 2vintage68 I am approaching my eighth decade of life and my first viewing on dvd at home I had serious doubts about the copious amounts of violence in this film, the odious cartel characters and physical appearance of Mr. Gibson was shocking. I have now watched it six or seven times and each time the stature of this film, in my mind grew taller. The script, acting and direction are all superb. There is not a dull moment and the film is capable of eliciting quite a bit of emotion in the viewer. One of my favorite directors from the past once said when he went to see a new film he always stayed for the second showing and only then did he make a decision on what he thought of the film.
