Tanya Wanna watch a bunch of cancelled creeps act like creeps for over 2 hours? Well-cast, especially since a lot of scandals have broken but overlong & very "new york" despite being set in California - which is de rigour for Woody Allen. Say what you will about Allen, but his penchant for writing strong, complex female characters is unparalleled. Jasmine, who could rightfully be described as a modern-day Blanche DuBois is as charming as she is infuriating, living in her own world of deception and mental illness. And Blanchett is phenomenal, an adjective I save for the cream of the crop. It's a truly magnificent performance that is among the best of the last decade. Blanchett is among the least vain of our modern actresses, even though she is among the most beautiful. She can look stunning in once scene and not so much the next. It's to Blanchett's credit that she makes Jasmine not only palatable but often endearing despite a troublesome set of character traits. She is surrounded by a great supporting cast and Allen's wonderful screenplay, which harkens back to the great work he did during the late 80s and early 90s. Fans of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE will find several parallels, but this feels like a true original, and Jasmine is an unforgettable character and atop the finest characterizations of Blanchett's career. Rated 5/5 Stars •  Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Woody Allen delivers another success with Cate Blanchett giving one of the best performances of her career A rich supporting cast includes Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, Peter Saarsgard, Lewis CK, and Bobby Canavalle Jasmine is a woman; a rich Manhattan socialite who was married to a man Hal but he ended up stealing all of her money He also defrauded his clients as a money manager affecting Jasmine's sister Ginger Falling on hard times she decides to move in with her sister in San Francisco We also see she's been suffering nervous breakdowns even talking to herself coming off perhaps manic abusing alcohol and anti-anxiety medications This movie really becomes an emotional roller coaster with Jasmine starting conversations with those around her and eventually blowing up their lives Allen directs her not as likable but providing a fascinating character study Blanchett is a pure gold here Rated 4/5 Stars •  Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/27/23 Full Review Gareth v Cate Blanchett is at the top of her game as a woman who's world is crumbling down and is the only reason to see this rather mean-spirited flick.
