Coming 2 America

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Decades after its predecessor joked about the fine line between love and nausea, Coming 2 America reminds audiences that there's an equally fine line between sequel and retread.

Audience Says

It isn't totally without laughs, but a lazy reliance on callbacks and a story that rehashes the first film make this sequel a letdown.

Michael Blackmon BuzzFeed News The sequel to the 1988 hit is not without its problems, but it's still mostly fun. Dec 17, 2021 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) It's lazy, barrel-scraping cinema at its worst. Rated: 1/5 Mar 13, 2021 Full Review Thelma Adams AARP Movies for Grownups Long live the king of Zamunda -- and a beat you can groove to. Rated: 4/5 Mar 12, 2021 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net After the brilliant and heartwarming DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, I had higher expectations from director Craig Brewer and Murphy. They make a great team, but the material just isn’t there this time. Rated: 2/5 Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Shawn Edwards Fox 4 Kansas City Eddie Murphy is a genius, the original is arguably the funniest movie ever made...not a bad movie, but more nostalgic than funny, a cinematic greatest hits package...surprisingly heart-felt, and the fans won't mind the films flaws... Rated: 3/5 May 23, 2024 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Coming 2 America spends too much time revisiting jokes and characters from the original without establishing new ones. Michael V Not sure why this movie did'nt get more love, I found it very entertaining and the costuming is beautiful. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Jenn S As a lover of the original film this sequel was cringy from start to wherever I finished it. Such a disappointment. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Sensei H Y'all crazy, this movie was fantastic! I was 17 years old in 1988 and this sequel really brought it! All the cameos and the storyline were well done and the throw back was totally nostalgic. Whoever rated this for Rotten Tomatoes and the audience were probably Millennials or Gen Z who weren't there and just don't get it. COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY UNDERRATED. BLASPHEMY! Eddie Murphy is a MOVIE GOD and I am totally offended by the ratings. Go back under your rocks or on your phones and stop rating movies that you are not qualified to rate. I spit in your general direction! PTUI, PTUI, PTUI! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Dinos K A great comedy with perfect comic timing (not this sh*t, the first movie) Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Chris M This is great but not quite as great as the first movie. It has some of the same issues as the first movie. But primarily, I think the main problem is for some reason they decide to make it PG-13. It's a direct to Amazon Prime movie, so that wider audience excuse for more box office bucks doesn't fly with this one. I would love to know why they took out the f bombs and the brief nudity the first had? Because I can't think of a thing. But others might condemn it for that poor decision, I still find it funny. The new young cast works and it could have surpassed the first if they went the full R, it's still great as is. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review Michael Antony A Mikey's Movie Review: Coming 2 America Originally intended for cinematic release, Amazon reportedly paid Paramount $125 million for an exclusive premiere. Whether or not they are content with their purchase only time will tell, but it's exactly what you feared it would be. It's difficult to know who this film is aimed at. For those of us who grew up during the '80's, with Coming To America and Eddie Murphy's more adult output (Trading Places, Beverley Hills Cop, 48 Hours), this is simply a tired, PG-13 retred of a funnier R-rated original. Although those who prefer the sillier slapstick of his family friendly late '90's work (The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle) will be equally disappointed. Writer Director Craig Brewer whose recent film Dolemite Is My Name (2019) gave Eddie Murphy his best role since Showgirls (2006) has basically given us a mostly laugh free, child friendly edit of the original. True, 30+ years on many of the jokes in the 1988 version might raise a PC eyebrow or two. But by repeating and censoring so many of the first film's best gags, while retelling the same story via the main protagonists kids (in doing so sidelining both Eddie Murphy & Arsenio Hall!), loses any good will we might have had to see these characters again. An incredible cast, but a missed opportunity and a true disappointment for Eddie Murphy fans. Mikey's Movie Rating: 2/5* Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
