Dear Evan Hansen

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dear Evan Hansen does a fair job of capturing the emotion of its source material, but it's undermined by questionable casting and a story that's hard to swallow.

Audience Says

This heartwarming story is relatable for teens and anyone who remembers being one -- and despite the age gap between himself and his character, Ben Platt's performance is great.

Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Something has been lost in translation from stage to screen because what's there now does not seem strong enough to have won best musical and best score on Broadway. And at 137 minutes, it does go on. Rated: 2/5 Dec 11, 2021 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) It's the cinema equivalent of rubbing cut onions in the eyes of the audience: film-making that is cynically and artificially engineered to make the audience weep. Rated: 2/5 Oct 24, 2021 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times The endless emotional frankness of the lyrics - those who seek the ironic distance of Sondheim need look elsewhere - becomes exhausting all too quickly. Rated: 2/5 Oct 22, 2021 Full Review Calum Cooper In Their Own League But the story Evan fabricates, even with context, is so shockingly abhorrent, and the film never recovers from that. Jul 15, 2024 Full Review Zach Pope Zach Pope Reviews I’m not familiar with the source material but I have no idea how it worked on stage… I could not get behind Hansen as a character making the entire film a giant mixed bag Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Emma-Jane Betts The Digital Fix When you are force-fed exactly what to feel and witness important social issues being used as placeholders for plot repeatedly without further investigation, you can’t help but question the sincerity of this musical flick’s messages. Josephine I've been a fan of Dear Evan Hansen since the musical. the book was good too. I thought the movie adaptation would be the icing on the cake, but I have to admit there were some notes missed for me. While the movie wouldn't be able to match the source material exactly, I was dissaoointed to see a few details and songs left out. but on the same not I feel like some scenes were changed for the better to make sense. Overall I'm happy I saw it and my love for Dear Evan Hansen is present. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/14/23 Full Review Liam Nagle The underlying story and songs were so great to begin with that it was impossible to butcher them completely. But Amy Adams was physically annoying to have to watch, and the audio mix kept the voices so much louder than the music. That being said, there were some poignant moments. For once, the audience would be right in thinking we could direct this movie musical better than the professionals. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/21 Full Review Nik & Lex We really enjoyed this movie. It's a bit of a heart wrenching tale though you feel for all involved, so be ready to emote some. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/30/21 Full Review MANDY S Richness of characters, fascinating storyline, heartbreaking! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/27/21 Full Review Suzanne M A show every high schooler, teacher, and parent should see Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/27/21 Full Review Ann S Incredibly good- a must see!!!
