Journalist Ricardo (Esai Morales) has always been enamored of renowned Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca (Andy Garcia). Several years after the poet's disappearance during the Spanish Civil War, Ricardo returns to Spain to investigate, despite the warnings of his father (Edward James Olmos). The dictator Franco is still very much in power, however, and Ricardo's continuing investigation draws the attention of Centeno (Miguel Ferrer), a security officer for the oppressive ruler. Audience Member I fell in love with Frederico's poems in college, the movie brings everything together. Its an amazing movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Frances H Well-intentioned and sincere in its adoration of Lorca, but this film's script is not very tightly woven and Andy Garcia as Lorca was a rather poor choice--he just doesn't come across as a poetic soul. Nice twist ending, though. With all its faults, still worth a watch. It does show the anti-intectualism of totalitarian governments. At that time it was a hint to me that Andy Garcia was developing into a serious actor with a serious artistic vision. So for the record, let me point out that Garcia has since done a trio of biographical films, all representing the artist in conflict with society. They are: 1) The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca (1998); 2) For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story (2001); and 3) Modigliani (2004). These works, all biographies of ethnic heavyweights, told of the turbulent lives of a Spanish poet/playwright, a Cuban jazz musician and a Spanish painter. All were terrific and although I recommend all three, this one is my favorite. Each of these titles is available through the Great Red Envelope whose name cannot be spoken.
