Timely as walls close in around nonbinary folks, and gay oppression as a pre-existing factor for fascism. We meet survivors, including two men who live the American Dream today in Hollywood as musicians and composers. Hitler didn't get them all.

I used to criticize the habit of colorizing archival footage but I have to admit: It works very well in the context of this documentary. I also really liked the mixture of archival footage, interview footage, and fictionalized scenes. Very moving!

Left out the parts about child abuse and beastiality being glamourised. Ignored the fact it was a hub of the bourgeoisie despised by the working classes. Funny how these things are always left out, hey?

This was a fantastic historical documentary focusing on Berlin's progressive LGBTQ+ culture in the 1920s and the aftermath during and after the horrific Nazi regime took power. Considering the new rise in conservative fascism today, it's a reminder that history can repeat itself.
