What to Know

Critics Consensus

While sporadically stirring, and suitably epic in its ambitions, Exodus: Gods and Kings can't quite live up to its classic source material.

Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint John Turturro, Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley add support in this sometimes campy and shallow, sometimes solemn, but mostly absorbing interpretation of the story of Moses. Aug 5, 2019 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association [Bale] a brilliant thespian. However, his Moses is a sullen and aloof man who is never compelling. Mar 21, 2017 Full Review Eric Kohn indieWire As a whole, Scott's version of this ancient tale feels oddly toothless -- neither religious or secular viewers will find much substance beyond the basics of the spectacle in play. Rated: C Jan 9, 2015 Full Review Benjamín Harguindey EscribiendoCine Ridley Scott has directed an entertaining and competent version of a story we all know and has imbued it with the “realism” with which we sweeten today's fantastic stories of yesteryear. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 6/10 Jan 2, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The most essential element lacking from the production, beyond even its historically inaccurate cast, remains the film's inability to find a new or novel relevance for an audience who has heard this story countless times before. Rated: 2/4 Jul 16, 2022 Full Review Kip Mooney Central Track How so many talented people came together here and just so completely whiffed on one of the most incredible stories ever written is beyond me. paul w An excellent take on the biblical book of Exodus. Of particular interest is Mose's struggles with God. It takes liberties with the Book, but if you're interested in a closer interpretation, there's always the Charlton Heston version 😁. And the special effects are stunning. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/12/24 Full Review Bryan G Anyone can read the book this was from, but this interpretation sucked. Really disappointing and a complete ket down. Whoever created it did NOT understand the story….clearly. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/05/24 Full Review Andrew A The CGI is dated, and it’s not the most Biblically accurate film. However, the deep themes of spiritual struggle and reconciliation with God make this one worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Dan P Was expecting so much more from this one. I found it boring event though the plagues were impressive to watch. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review James B good visual effects scenes but the animated film the prince of egypt is way way better than this film Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Rick M A pathetic, worldly modern interpretation that has Moses as an uninspired, wsr- mongering, worldly man. The historical accuracy of almost every detail is totally uninspiring. Not sure what they were trying to do with this film, but it fails miserably. And what the hell was that damn kid that kept showing up?! The writers' idea of the god of the Hebrews? A terrible depiction, from start to finish.
