Since her sister's disappearance, Jax (Lily Gladstone) has cared for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. At the risk of Jax losing custody to Roki's grandfather, Frank (Shea Whigham), the pair hit the road and scour the backcountry to track down Roki's mother in time for the powwow. What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system. Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack) Fancy Dance toggles between a thriller, a murder mystery, a road movie, and a social drama, and if the shifts aren't always smooth, the fine performances and an undercurrent of fury toward the injustices faced by Indigenous women hold it together. Rated: 3/4 Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's maybe a little too subtle, but the performances and sense of place are so strong. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) It’s an elegant film with a lot of restraint but packed with emotions. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Simon Miraudo Movie Squad (RTRFM 92.1) Lived-in and legitimate, Fancy Dance is a compelling family drama that only plays a little unevenly when it veers towards thriller tropes. Rated: 3/5 Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Emma Vine Loud and Clear Reviews Viewers couldn’t have asked for a more sincere and unfiltered narrative than the one Fancy Dance delivers, with Gladstone giving us one of the best performances of the year. Rated: 4/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Jack Martin Film Feeder It’s further proof that Lily Gladstone will, indeed, win her already overdue Oscar at some point in the illustrious career that she is on the cusp of launching into the stratosphere. Larry W Very powerful story. Lily Gladstone is an amazing actress. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/18/24 Full Review Tom F Like many of the better Apple movies, this has a strong idea and cast but in the end turns out to be just okay. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Wayne M Fancy Dance is a powerful and important drama, considered and smart it feels like a vital film. For Native American film maker Erica Tremblay this film is her feature debut and she has done a wonderful job. Set in Reservation land in Oklahoma we follow a family, namely two sisters. Jax is caring for her niece after her sister, Tawi, has gone missing. She is trying to find her as her niece, Roki, is looking to compete in the annual powwow in Oklahoma City and wants her mother there. Things get complicated when child services remove Roki and send her to her grandfather's place because Jax has a criminal record. The FBI then become involved when Jax takes Roki with her on her quest for Tawi and this is considered kidnapping. This superb film is quietly powerful and and is a great glimpse into the world of Native American living. The cast is fine, especially Lily Gladstone as Jax. Shea Whigham is also great in support. A fine and very powerful film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Rick C Absolutely laborious and boring. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/01/24 Full Review Tетяна В An elegant, sincere film. The unsurpassed Lily Gladstone, who lives the story, one of thousands of similar real-life stories of indigenous peoples... I always feel pain when I watch films about the indigenous peoples of America.... modern people who live there and call themselves Americans are real occupiers who have committed genocide against indigenous peoples. And this continues, and the issues of these peoples are very inconvenient for this state... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Misha C Great acting. Story not so much.
