What to Know

Critics Consensus

An old-fashioned courtroom drama with a contemporary edge, A Few Good Men succeeds on the strength of its stars, with Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and especially Jack Nicholson delivering powerful performances that more than compensate for the predictable plot.

Edward Guthmann San Francisco Chronicle It's directed with taut efficiency by Rob Reiner. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 11, 2023 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek Designed to get the audience rooting for this upper-class underdog, the movie accomplishes its task with military efficiency. But since the deck is stacked and the cards well worn, it hardly seems a victory to cherish. Feb 8, 2018 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Tribune By pitting Cruise against Nicholson in the film`s final courtroom confrontation, Sorkin and Reiner are pitting two notions of masculinity and two notions of stardom against each other. Rated: 3/4 Apr 30, 2014 Full Review Oti For Your Reference Podcast Surface level, I can see why this intrigued me. I can see why it was good in terms of building the tension and trying to at least arouse some aspects of suspense. But does that a good movie make? I'm not sure. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 13, 2023 Full Review KT Mahe For Your Reference Podcast Aaron Sorkin is the puppet master of snarky word vessels. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Stephen Silver Tilt Magazine Especially notable for its understanding of something — the conflict between the “elites” of blue America and the more traditional institutions of the military, police, and the like (30th anniversary) Rated: 4.5/5 Dec 13, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Jack V One of the best legal dramas. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/07/24 Full Review Adam S A nearly perfect courtroom drama. Great cast, pacing and script. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/24 Full Review Dave C The tightly-pressed, well-worn, straight-backed, but ultimately show-boat style of this classic courtroom military drama is what keeps it running. I've see this countless times since I was a youngster, and it still entertains as much now as it did the first time I watched it Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Donald S One of the great movies of all-time. Much of it due to Jack Nicholson putting together the most captivating and incredible 30minutes of screen time I've ever seen in Cinema. "You Can't Handle the Truth!" Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Garrett S As a tail-end millennial, there are hundreds of must-see blockbuster films that narrowly evaded the scope of my Overton window, and “A Few Good Men” was one of them. I caught a flight back from the Middle East a few days ago and decided to give it a go through some complimentary headphones. Oh. My. God. Let me first say this: I’ve been a Marine for nine years. My first deployment was actually guard force for Guantanamo Bay. This movie did an unbelievably good job with what it means to be a Marine. There was some cheesy dialogue, sure, but the vast majority of each and every set piece was believable right down to the ribbon placement on the uniforms. When pulling out Dawson’s service record, even the envelope containing it is identical to the one in my trunk. But the real kudos goes to the themes and messaging in this movie. There are times when I find myself siding with Jessep, and times when I'm questioning myself. the morality behind unofficial in-house disciplinary action is a topic that cant be easily defined, and this movie highlights that perfectly. To any of my gunslingers out there who haven't watched it, Id give it a 9.5/10. highly reccomend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Tarek J I still remember what theater I saw this in. The 2nd best Cruise movie ever. Everyone kicks ass in this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
