Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Damien Chazelle is an enthusiastic, visually expressive filmmaker with practically nothing of interest to say about the human experience. Mar 3, 2020 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint First Man doesn't just dwell on its subject's achievements. It takes a beat to glance into Armstrong's personal motivations and vulnerabilities while using technical mastery to tell an engrossing true-life story. Jul 29, 2019 Full Review Ryan Gilbey New Statesman In those sequences when Armstrong is heading for the stars, the approach is so immersive on a sensory level -- cacophonous sound design, juddering cinematography verging on the abstract -- that it almost compensates for the void at the film's core. Jan 26, 2019 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film First Man is extravagant filmmaking it every way. The craft is sharp. The story is surprising. The emotion is real. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) Subsequently, we also see how Armstrong looks to the moon for escapism. Behind First Man is a captivating look at grief. Rated: 3/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Ryan McQuade InSession Film The cinematography in the film is fantastic and for his first film not about music, Chazelle gets the best score of any of his films from composer Justin Hurwitz, one that might just be my favorite score of the year so far Rated: A Apr 3, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Brian H First Man is unlike anything I've seen before! Ryan Gosling delivers probably his best performance. The lunar sequence blew me away. Overall, this is a beautiful film and I will definitely be watching again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Gerald H Now, if there ever was a film uncalled for … Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Eye C Technically it is outstanding, the score magnificent… but the story is so dark, so depressing that holds that feeling of hope and joy that a voyage into the space should bring. Mr. Chazelle giving us, as always, the dark side of blooming events. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Alec B Obviously a triumph of effects, art direction, and sound design but it left me a little cold, I think because Armstrong remains the same impenetrable figure from start to finish. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Christian S Disappointing. The movie muted an amazing and exciting historical time. It marginalized the dedicated work thousands put into changing our relationship with space exploration forever by tailoring the movie to the "me" generation. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Lex v Big Meh. Boring and too long. Everything feels depressing with no real effort in trying to achieve accuracy. Lacks any exitement and awe that apollo 13 managed to portray. Felt as if armstrong was taken along for the ride and not partaking in it. Sound effect are horrendous. Spaceships all sound like a rusty fence gates. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
