Critics Consensus

While Four Hours at the Capitol may not provide the most cogent thesis on the January 6 attack, it provides a thorough and visceral record of that infamous day's events.

Jeff M No horror film ever made can compare to the horrific images on display in this riveting, often devastating and necessary documentary. I think I can honestly say I've never watched anything in my life during which I yelled at the screen so much or alternately held my hand to my mouth and shook my head in disgust. There were moments I almost turned it off, but thankfully my viewing companion kept me strong with commentary and discussion. It is virtually impossible to watch something like this without a political agenda, and I am not going to lie and say I watched with an unbiased eye. And although the filmmakers do a good job of relating facts without much of a slant, I finished this movie more confident than ever that the previous occupant of the White House is at least partially responsible and many involved should be considered domestic terrorists. Perhaps those with an alternate opinion will come away from this differently. At the end I did feel like the filmmakers held back a bit or possibly did not feel confident in being totally uncensored. But overall it ruffled my feathers and presented images and interviews I had not seen before. And anyone who still doubts the severity of what happened on January 6, well, I just don't know to say. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review John R While there is, of course, a great deal of editorial decision making that goes into a documentary like this, I think this is probably about as close as you can get to an unadulterated look at what went on at the Capitol on January 6th. The level of violence was something I think I missed in the news coverage. I was under the impression that Ashli Babbitt's death was an outlier in terms of the level of violence, but it seems that wasn't really the case. Those big mosh pit crowd fights that lasted for multiple hours were a little mind boggling. I was also struck by the weird nature of the mob and the tendency for there to be swings from riotous violence to "let me get this up on my Instagram," often by the same exact people. It really makes what happened that day hard to qualify. The NYT photographer who was there mentioned that he thought there were a lot of people there who were just messing around, but there were also some people who were there to do some serious stuff. You hear "insurrection" and you don't picture the unserious people, like QAnon Shaman. Like, maybe he's there, but he has a bomb strapped to himself. Clearly a day of chaos and uncertainty. The verdict of history: too soon to tell. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review isla s This film gives a chilling picture of the events of the incursion on the White House in January 2021. I remember seeing some footage of it on the news that day - it was quite scary to see what was happening and it's certainly interesting to hear from those in authority, who found themselves having to try to deal with what was one massive riot. The saying 'strength in numbers' certainly applied to this situation and its really quite unsettling how people acted. This is a thought provoking documentary which may remind people that the US is still very much a divided country, regardless of who the current administration in charge is. A sobering watch, I'd recommend this, yes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review cem y This is a wonderful documentary depicting a horrific moment (in terms of the mindset it represents) in American history. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely terrible. It can only be described as propaganda. Utterly dishonest. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Manny P Thank god for the gene pool. Most of this I'm familiar with because of the extensive news footage, but cowardly morons, who hide their identity, should have no platform and that's what disappoints. I can only hope that the chief muppet has a day of reckoning in the not too distant future. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/26/22 Full Review Read all reviews
