Set in the changing world of the late 1960s, "Girl, Interrupted" is the searing true story of Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder), a young woman who finds herself at a renowned mental institution for troubled young women, where she must choose between the world of people who belong on the inside -- like the seductive and dangerous Lisa (Angelina Jolie) -- or the often difficult world of reality on the outside. What to Know

Critics Consensus

Angelina Jolie gives an intense performance, but overall Girl, Interrupted suffers from thin, predictable plotting that fails to capture the power of its source material.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online It's an interesting story, based on actual events. Rated: A Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan Time Out Does it matter that every time Jolie's offscreen the film wilts a little? Ryder should be perfect as the bright spark; her lines are sharp as a knife. There's a gap, however, between what we hear and what we see. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Peter Stack San Francisco Chronicle A muddled production that misses the jarring tone of the autobiographical book by Susanna Kaysen on which it is based. The film is entertaining, but not very powerful. Rated: 2/4 Jun 18, 2002 Full Review Michael Cuby them. In our modern political climate, I can't think of a better narrative to revisit. Sep 28, 2022 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine Girl, Interrupted is well-performed but hollow - and ultimately unsatisfying. Rated: 5/10 Oct 28, 2020 Full Review Antonia Quirke Independent on Sunday The film is entirely disposable. Watching a group of teenagers "tongue their meds" (which does not mean doing something rude with a junior doctor) and sobbing out of windows is boring. Nov 27, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member i love this movie so much. as sad as it is, i am literally lisa and daisy combined. this movie also showed the reality and the flaws of what being in a mental hospital is like. this movie will forever be my favorite. i recommend to not watch this movie ONLY if you get triggered easily though. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Greg P I had to force myself to watch the whole thing. I didn't see it when it came out, and now I know why. This is probably one of the only times I agree with critics, it was predictable and slow. I kept asking my daughter (14yr old) why she liked it and she couldn't "put a finger on it". This is just one of many, many starred movies that just didn't make the cut. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review L S One of the few movies I’d give a 5. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Heaven G I chose the film rating and mental health rating with 5 stars due to the accuracy this film portrays mental health disorders especially borderline personality disorder. It shows a true showcase of how people who struggle with patterns of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity throughout this film. As well as how it was portrayed in the 1960's. To top it off, Winona Ryder's and Angelina Jolie's acting was top notch. I would recommend this film to anyone who wants to get a better understanding of how mental illness can take control of people's lives, but also to get a better understanding of their struggles. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review helder f This movie approaches mental illness from a perspective from a patient. This is important to note. This is not a movie that a good psychoanalyst would write, as all characters are very shallowly represented in their psychological suffering . In fact, none of the characters is very likable, perhaps exactly because they’re all represented as flawed and self absorbed in their misery. Nonetheless, it is still able to reflect the problem of mental health and its treatment. The lack of her knowledge of what her own conflicts are is telling. One would hope that after 18 months, one would learn a bit more about herself. A person who is not very psychologically minded and holds to their symptoms and a possibly a therapeutic approach that doesn’t foster curiosity over oneself. She thus come up with some answers, which are as simplistic as her lack of answers. Another aspect that’s well captured is the relationships that are established among patients despite their illness. I think the casting is great. Almost typed. Wyona brings up the flavor of self indulgent sufferer. If they selected Hathaway for this role, I think the effect would have been similar. Goldberg, the grandiose nurse who thinks she knows it all. Jolie is a bit out of place and her role required a bit more of acting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/06/24 Full Review s a amazing plot, amazing acting, amazing story, amazing movie Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
