What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dark, intelligent, and stylish to a fault, Gone Girl plays to director David Fincher's sick strengths while bringing the best out of stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.

Olivia Luder One Room With A View Gone Girl is the movie Flynn fans hoped for and sets Pike up for a worthy Oscar nomination but Fincher disappoints in failing to improve upon the already-brilliant book. Rated: 4/5 May 25, 2019 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Gone Girl is a rather funhouse version of this fateful couple's relationship that teeters on depravity, desperation and bitter irony in its every step. Rated: A Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire 'Gone Girl' may come advertised as a thriller, but that's Fincher being a trickster-he's gone and made the curtest, nastiest, most acidic black comedy about the marital accord since 'The War of the Roses.' Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Ankit Ojha Cinema Elite The makers want you to relax—maybe even curse under your breath—and feel like you’re in control until they rudely pull the rug off your feet. Rated: 4.5/5 Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views The film is a character study, an analysis of gender norms with a regressive, problematic underbelly that could easily be missed because the movie is so darn entertaining. Jun 12, 2024 Full Review Erick Estrada Cinegarage Without prescriptions or clichés, Fincher manages to show the lights and shadows of the two central characters: the perfect marriage of the common man and the femme fatale. Benjamin G I happened to wake up in the middle of the night and didn't feel like falling back to sleep right away, so, I turned on a movie. I figured it'd help me fall back asleep, which didn't happen. Like the critics consensus states, "Gone Girl" is a dark, intelligent, and stylish film, the book-to-movie tale was so gripping that I ended up spending the morning perplexed by what I had just watched. Affleck and the rest of the cast carry the film well, but it's particularly Rosamund Pike's performance that left me juggling a number of emotions. The movie is a lot of things (i.e. thriller, mystery), but at its core it is a romance film about a couple in a struggling marriage. The film forces one to question how/why people might experience such dark thoughts during a relationship. Sadly, I've watched enough true crime documentaries to know that such extreme behavior does exist in failed relationships, I've also seen sectors of lowbrow media try and shape public opinions on real-life cases in a manner that is certainly less than appropriate and helpful. Thankfully, Fincher's approach helps keep the movie on a more obsidian, psychological, artistic level rather than outright gore or preachiness. Overall, It's a very watchable film with a sharp cast and sharp direction, I would recommend it to those who like a thriller with some depth that might make you lose some sleep. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review Christopher N Surrealism at its best. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/07/24 Full Review freya n A must watch. Brilliant cast and an even better storyline. To say it kept me hooked is an understatement. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/02/24 Full Review Mark A great movie but the ending isnt satisfying Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Mate P Gone Girl is a very well-paced interesting movie. The story is interesting, haunting and some of it is very realistic. I couldn't understand some character decisions, which took me out in a few occasions. The acting in this movie is outstanding, especially by Rosamund Pike. I know Ben Affleck's acting shows true emotions, because he has te same look on his face in thw recent pictures with Jennifer Lopez. There is nothing extraordinary in editing, cinematography, sound design and visual effects, because this is obviously a romantic thriller. I like Gone Girl for its interesting story, but I found some character decisions weird. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Colin S This movie was good until the end it pissed me off so much. Why did that guy say with his psychotic wife. Because of the child? If my wife tried to frame my murder and come back after killing a man and knowing she has framed two rapes, I would not stay with her no matter what. Why didn’t he just place mics around the house so he could catch her admitting her guilt. There are so many ways to solve this but for some reason he just didn’t it was so annoying. I would honestly just crash out on the wife and take the jail time over that. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
