Becca James Chicago Reader Hanky Panky is a delightfully unserious horror movie crammed with comedy. Apr 20, 2024 Full Review Kristy Puchko Mashable Proudly a B-movie, this gleefully silly slasher plays like the best stoner comedies, offering a world where paranoia is justified and getting high is downright heroic. Apr 19, 2024 Full Review Romey Norton Film Focus Online Hanky Panky is the stupidly funny horror-comedy of the year. Rated: 3/5 Jul 22, 2024 Full Review Lissete Lanuza Sáenz Fangirlish Hanky Panky, however, is the right kind of silly movie. What does that mean? It means that there’s a moment where things get so absurd that you wonder if there was ever a plot, or if you just imagined there was. And yet, you never reach for the remote. Jul 1, 2024 Full Review Hayden Mears Starburst Sharp, silly, and brimming with disarming emotional intelligence, Hanky Panky is an energetic horror-comedy with the chops – and the good sense – to indulge its goofy premise without resorting to insincerity. Rated: 4/5 Jun 3, 2024 Full Review Amy Tonta That Shelf Perhaps this wacky comedy horror is not for everyone, but if you want something that isn’t afraid to get bizarre in splicing the two genres, then this fun ride would be for you. Jacqueline J Hanky panky is an entertaining, comical, and surprising film. The characters in this film are unique and eccentric, with each having their own dramatic and over the top presence. I enjoyed the film’s characterization and how we got to know the background of each person. I found Sam's character especially entertaining. His relationship with the handkerchief was both bizarre and amusing. Aspects of the film such as the setting of the cabin made for a promising storytelling environment. Moreover, while horror isn't particularly an emphasis in this movie, some of its features were reminiscent of B horror films, especially in its use of “special effects''. This made the viewing experience even more entertaining in my opinion as it created a nostalgic feel in a modern movie. It’s definitely worth a watch and has the potential for a cult following. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review una p Honestly, this movie was so entertaining it just was not my cup of tea and I don’t think I would go out of my way to rewatch, however I really appreciated the creativity that went into it. I think the actors who played Carla and Sam did a phenomenal job and really made the script flow in an immersive way where it felt real and less like they were reading off a script. I feel like it was evidently a lower budget film, not necessarily in a bad way though, and it really took me out of it when I could see the strings on the handkerchief and hat and the graphics kind of threw me off, but honestly, I think it gives the movie that campy charm, I just see this as more of a comedy/ camp film than a horror movie. I think there was a lot of unnecessary things added like random cussing, random changes in plot, etc, I wish there was more of a focus in the first half because I didn’t really know where it was going, however I did like the mystery unfolding to see who was behind the murders so it was pretty intriguing. I think with filling some of the plot holes sooner and leaving less space in the adding of new plot lines, it could have been a bit better. I think all the random bits of this movie both threw me off and reeled me in. From incest, to addiction, to talking objects, this movie was the definition of “keeping you on your toes” and “never let them know your next move” but it was definitely a very interesting film with a lot of creativity. Hats off to the creator, pun intended. I did enjoy it though and I am glad I got to experience it anyway. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Brenda S Hanky Panky is an entertaining movie from start to finish, if not anything else. The film's visual aspect is what I found to have appreciated the most, with a lot of thought put into creating a cozy cabin aesthetic. Paired with a humorous script and wide variety of different characters like the handkerchief Woody, it is a through-and-through hilariously NOT scary movie. It is a refreshing addition to both the comedy and horror genre's. The acting is also something I was pleasantly surprised by in a low-budget film. The main lead, Sam, was a pleasure to watch and the support from the rest of the cast helped this movie add up to be very coherent. It is sometimes risky to introduce so many different characters early on in the film, but Hanky Panky did a great job at making sure there is a reason for all them being included and does not leave anyone out. The scenery of where this film was chosen to be made is what I loved most. The cabin in the snowy mountains automatically makes this a cozy, easy-to-watch movie that you can enjoy with family, friends, or even by yourself. I enjoyed watching it on a Sunday which made for the perfect comic relief on a relaxing day. I highly recommend watching this if you are not usually a fan of horror, as the humor and puns in this movie will make you hope for more films with this perfect mix of comedy and suspense! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review Martin B IF ONLY I COULD HAVE WATCHED THIS WITH NO STRINGS ATTACHED! I would have given this movie four stars but I had to knocked one whole star off because of the strings. If you're in the mood for a good B movie comedy then I would still recommend this but the string kind of ruined it for me personally. I can't be any more specific than that without going into spoiler territory but when you watch the movie you'll see what I'm talking about. Cheap special effects are of course one of the hallmarks of a low budget movie but the string scenes made it hard for me to be 'IN' the movie as opposed to being in my own reality and just watching actors on a screen. Now that might just be me. For someone else, the string scenes might actually boost the comic effect. Watch the movie. You be the judge. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Maximiliano D Where do I begin with my thoughts in regards of Hanky Panky. I would say its not comparable with other "horror" films this one sets itself apart. Its not really a horror film its entirely just pure comedy from beginning to the end. When watching the film it was giving me like littler vibes about the Scary Movie franchise. Not in a single point within the film I felt fear at all. I am a type of viewer of entertainment that enjoys a quality comedy entertainment. In this film the comedy was decent to me it didn't really make me laugh it was just a slight chuckle. The story of the film was interesting it did get me hooked for a bit, but sadly somewhere near the end I lost interest. The cinematography in the film seemed like a youtube video to me for example like for a parody. It did bother me a bit because I am so used to seeing that cinematography look especially in a film. Although it did get better later in the film I will give it that at least because at some points it was a bit annoying hearing it talk. The voice acting for the talking napkin seemed like it could've been better if it had like a very deep voice. Just to make throw me off as a viewer and laugh about it. The acting from the cast was pretty good as well it didn't seemed like there was such little effort. Everyone to me seemed like they played their role with effort and not just there for the money. For all these reasons I mentioned above this fim gets a 4/5 because it was a budget film. For a budget film it was pretty decent and I believe if more money was put into it. The film would have been a good film as it currently stands right now. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Mateo S "Hanky Panky" is a horror film that seems to belong to the comical horror cult genre, and it makes this very obvious. If you are a fan of movies like "Killer Sofa," "Evil Bong," or "The VelosiPastor," then there is a really good chance you will like this movie. It exudes what I like to call “stoner humor,” as the movie is over the top, overdramatic, and just plain weird. So, for the average view, I would not recommend it as it requires a certain type of humor. That said, if you like this type of absurd humor or are a horror movie fan in general, I think it is worth watching. You can definitely tell by watching the film that the creators love all things horror and play with many generic tropes and serotypical murder mystery characters. The writing is campy but intentionally so as the movie is very self-aware. While cheesy, there was a good amount of chemistry between the odd bunch of characters, and you could tell that everyone was just having a blast. Having the always-hilarious Seth Green as the voice of Harry the Hat was an amazing choice, even though 90% of the lines were maniacal laughter. Finally, continuing the theme of cult horror, the special effects were fantastically horrible. From the very obvious fake blood, cheap edited special effects, or the very visible strings attached to Harry and Woody, it all feels intentional and adds to the comedy. Throughout my watch, I couldn’t help but point out the flaws, but it was never in a negative way, as it added to the movie's charm. To wrap everything up, this might very well be a cult film in a few years. Despite being targeted at a very particular audience, there is probably a little something for everyone to enjoy. If I had to sum up this movie, I would simply say, "It is so bad it’s good," and I had a blast. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Read all reviews
