Lauren Carroll Harris Guardian Hannah Gadsby spins her own life story into a clever, raging and confronting spiel against misogyny, homophobia and even the tired old tropes of comedy itself. Aug 5, 2019 Full Review Ashley Hoffman TIME Magazine When Gadsby wrenches out her pain on stage, she reveals her strength, rage, and yes, winning humor. Nov 20, 2018 Full Review Hannah Strong Little White Lies Gadsby is tired of censoring her own pain for the sake of making audiences feel comfortable. Nanette is a testament to this. It's time to make audiences feel uncomfortable in order to wake them up. Sep 24, 2018 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut The Netflix "comedy special" Nanette is a televised version of Hannah Gadsby's award-winning "stand up" stage show from 2017. It is so eye-opening, personal and encouraging that it feels unfair to squeeze it into a nutshell. Rated: 5/5 Jan 31, 2021 Full Review Angela L. Harmon The NitPic Gadsby realized that turning her pain into comedy actually forced her to create a specific narrative of her own life that she repeated night after night until it became her reality. Dec 11, 2019 Full Review Catherine Capellaro Isthmus (Madison, WI) Gadsby grabs your attention with jokes and then slowly and expertly peels back layers to reveal a deep well of shame and anger. Kevin S Dude-Bros on here lambasting this set because it's too "woke" or "PC" need to chill out. No, it's not your typical hour-long comedy stand-up set. You won't be rolling on the floor laughing the whole time, and there will be moments that may make you feel uncomfortable. But it will be very, very worth it. Hannah is incredible at building tension. Much of the time, she uses that tension for the payoff of a big punchline. But other times, she uses it simply to speak her truth in a way she has never been able to before. And she bears her soul doing it. I guess some people can't handle that sort of thing. Or maybe they just can't take a joke. And at the end of the day, even if you don't enjoy the show for its entertainment value, it's a story (and a message) you may need to hear. And if you think you don't need to hear it, then you DEFINITELY need to hear it. That being said, I thought the parts intended to be funny were indeed quite funny. It's certainly a hell of a lot funnier than a lot of the other stand-up on Netflix. But that's just my opinion. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Jennifer M Raw and absolutely genius non-traditional comedy special. Hannah's approach to stand-up in this special is unlike anything I've ever seen. If you're looking for an easy laugh, this is not the place to find it. But she will take you on an emotional roller coaster that will either give you a fresh perspective on the world, or bring you in close for a laugh, a mental hug, and -- possibly -- a much-needed cry. Not for the faint of heart or fragile masculine egos. There are no holds barred in this special. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Ellis M A battle cry. A warning. An absolute necessity. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review CiPhEr505 'Hey, I'm X. Isn't that funny how X people experience Y? Well, you should have laughed at my jokes when you had the chance, because the world hates X and people like X, and you listener represent the evils of life... ...and that's how I became a comedian' Oops!!! I wasn't supposed to spoil everything. Well you can thank me later Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/29/23 Full Review Carl B When a critic rating and audience score vary this much you know there's something odd. I watched the show to prove it couldn't be as bad as people said. I was wrong. In a 1 hour show, apparently a comedy show, I didn't laugh out loud once, smiled maybe twice and almost chuckled once. Canned audience laughter and more applause of agreement than genuine laughing from the audience. At least a quarter of the show was Gadsby giving out to society or attempting to elicit pity. Bizarre and awful, even by the standards of today. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/23 Full Review Bgautam M I just can't understand how she has become a famous comedian. She should not be even considered as a comedian. I came across her comedies in youtube a few times. I couldn't laugh at any of her jokes. Just out of curiosity, I took it upon myself as a challenge of watching her content for one hour straight, hoping I get atleast few laughs for 1 or 2 jokes. Nope...all I got at the end of the hour was headache. She is officially the worst comedian I came across in my whole life. She is a disgrace to comedy.
