Critics Consensus

Yet another movie about relationships in the Big Apple, Heights is never dull thanks to a competent cast.

Kerry Lengel Arizona Republic If the plot is thin, at least the characters are interesting, and the performances are consistently strong. Rated: 3/5 Jul 28, 2005 Full Review Roger Moore Orlando Sentinel Amy Fox's play, with New York clichs for characters, was never going to hit, ahem, the movie heights. But cut loose in the middle of a comic-book summer, Heights is just different enough, just adult enough, to warrant a climb and a look. Audience Member Exceptional cast of characters, led by the amazing Glenn Close (who can do no wrong in my book), but the movie left me cold. I got more pleasure watching Glenn be all Shakespearean than anything else in the film. Elizabeth Banks was very good too, as was James Marsden, but overall, thank goodness it was a short film (length-wise). Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Heights is an urban drama with intersecting lives and stories. It is a relatively light film where one observes the interactions between the characters, has insights, and is not so much engaged with them; it is more pensive than emotional. The acting and filmmaking are good and I recommend it for those who are in the mood for this kind of film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member A lot of good actors. a bad script. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member An ensemble piece set in NYC. The performances are convincing and NY surroundings come off authentic, but the story gets almost undone by way too contrived final act. It might have worked in a stage play, but not so much in a movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Another delightful surprise by Merchant/Ivory team. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member While it definitely has some interesting aspects, it also often feels lazy and uneven.
